TEXT
[1] The air traffic control (ATC) system is comprised of ground and airborne
components. When interrogated by ground or other airborne systems, the
airborne transponder automatically transmits a coded reply signal. This reply
signal is used to identify, track and locate the airplane. The reply signals may
also include other pertinent data about the airplane to the ground station. The
data is displayed on ground station radar displays or displayed on Traffic Alert
and Collision Avoidance system (TCAS) equipped airplane displays. TCAS
computers use the data for collision avoidance calculations.
[2] There are two ATC system in use: the air traffic control radar beacon
system (ATCRBS) and the mode select (mode S ) system. These systems are
compatible. ATCRBS provides position, identity and altitude information to
ground and airborne TCAS interrogators. The mode s system is initiated to
decrease the number of interrogations and replies in high density areas and to
provide the data needed by airborne TCAS computers while still providing all
the ATCRBS information.
[3] The ATC is distinguished from the primary surveillance radar (PSR). The
primary surveillance radar, used by the air traffic control ground station,
provides the ground station controller with a symbol on his surveillance radar
scope for every aircraft in his area. The primary surveillance radar is a reflection
type radar not requiring any response from the aircraft. The secondary
surveillance radar (SSR), sometimes refered to as Air Traffic Control Radar
Beacon System, has an antenna mounted above the primary surveillance radar
antenna and transmits coded signals to target airplanes. The airplane's
transponder replies to SSR interrogation with a coded pulse group. The SSR
requires response from the target airplane. The side lobe suppression (SLS)
antenna is an omnidirectional antenna used to transmit side lobe suppression
signal.
[4] The mode S transponders and interrogators enhance ATCRBS by :
decreasing the number of interrogations and responses necessary to track and
identify airplanes.
adding a data link capability to transmit and receive pertinent information.
