TEXT
[1] The automatic direction finder (ADF) is used for automatic determination of
relative bearing to a transmitting radio station. Normally, the radio station is a
non-direction continuous-wave homing beacon or a standard AM broadcast
station operating in the frequency range of 190KHz to 1750KHz. ADF receives
AM radio signals and determines the direction of the signals relative to the
longitudinal axis of the airplane. From this signal the relative bearing is
displayed on the RDDMI (radio direction distance magnetic indicator ) and
EHSI.
[2] Figure 28-1 illustrates the ADF component locations. ADF No. 1 and No.2
circuit breakers are located on the P18 and P6 panel, respectively. The dual

control panel is located on the aft electronics panel (P8).The ADF No.1 and
No.2 receivers are located on the electronic equipment shelf (E2-4). 2 EHSI and
2 RDDMI are located on the captain's panel and first officer's panel respectively.
The loop antennas are located on the bottom of the airplane at station 560 and
600 .The quadrantal error correctors are located above the loop antennas. The
sense antennas and couplers are located on the bottom left and right side of the
airplane, just aft of the main landing gear wheel well at station 727 L, and 727
R.
[3] Figure 28-2 illustrates the ADF dual control panel, this panel allows the
selection of frequency and mode of operation for either of the ADF systems.

(1) ADF 1 and ADF 2 mode selector switch ----- These switches have 4
position:OFF , ANT, ADF and TEST.
 OFF -------- power is removed from system
 ANT -------- ADF receiver is used for reception of audio signal, such as
weather broadcast and radio range signals. Only the sense
antenna circuits are used.
