If the samples from the fuel tank sumps do not show signs of contamination, do the subsequent steps:
(a)
Start the APU (AMM 49-11-00/201)
(b)
Start the engines (AMM 71-00-00/201).
(c)
Let them operate approximately 5-8 minutes or until the dirty fuel is flushed from the fuel system.
(d)
Make sure that the engine and its controls operate correctly in all standard power settings.
(e)
Speak to the engine and APU manufacturers about more
inspections or tests.

After you operate the engine and APU, remove the fuel filter (AMM 73-11-02/401).

Do a check of the engine fuel filter and the fuel filter bowl for signs of contamination of the fuel.

If you see no signs of contamination, do these steps:
(a)
Install the fuel filter (AMM 73-11-02/401).
(b)
Operate the airplane as usual.

If you see signs of contamination, do these steps:
(a)
Clean the filter bowl.
(b)
Replace the fuel filter (AMM 73-11-02/401).
(c)
Apply the full procedure described above again.

(14) If the engines do not operate correctly, or if contamination continues, you will possibly have to do more engine inspections and tests.

6. Fuel Tank Cleaning, Microbial Growth, and Corrosion Removal
___________________________________________________________
A. General
(1)
This section has these procedures:
(a)
Clean the fuel tank
(b)
Look for structural corrosion
(c)
Look for damage to the fuel tank sealant or the corrosion resistant finish.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE DETERGENTS TO REMOVE FUNGUS FROM THE TANK SURFACES.
_______ THEY WILL CAUSE THE MICROBES AND THE FUNGUS TO INCREASE IN OTHER LOCATIONS.

The fuel tanks can have corrosion caused by fungus and microbes. The fungus and microbes are in hydrocarbon fuels, and they become attached to the bottom surfaces of the tanks. You can remove the fungus from the tank surfaces with a fiber brush and water. You can also use a steam cleaner. If you use a steam cleaner, it helps to remove the fuel fumes. It also helps you to find the loose or damaged finish. The steam cleaner causes the badly bonded finish to come off.

While the tanks are wet with fuel, the fungus is a black, smooth, moist material. When the tanks are dry, the fungus is a solid material on the tank surfaces. The solid material can have a light brown color when it is dry. If there is fungus, it is usually in the bottom lower panel of the wing. You can also find fungus in the areas adjacent to the bottom panel where the water collects. Fungus can possibly add to the corrosion of the structure. If you find some corrosion, refer to the Structural Repair Manual.
