need a flight test, unless the
application coincides with the expiry
of a Class 4 Rating. If you are
subject to follow-up action about
your Flight Test Record under

from a Class 4 to a Class 3.
If you are a Forces or foreign
instructor, as above, you need some
dual instruction under a Class 1
Instructor, who must give you a
letter of recommendation for the
flight test, as described in the Flight
Test Standard Flight Instructor Rating—
Aeroplanes, Helicopters, Aerobatic
(TP5537).
Period of Validity
Initially, to the first day of the
twenty-fifth month following the
month the most recent Class 4 test
was conducted, or from the date of
the Class 3 test.
Class 2 - 421.71/79
Privileges
You may exercise the privileges of a
Class 3 instructor, supervise a Class
4 instructor and act as CFI of a flight
training unit.
Prerequisites
You must have held a Class 3 Rating
in the previous 12 months and meet
the following knowledge, experience
and skill requirements.
Knowledge
In the last 24 months, you must have
got over 70% in the Flight Instructor
Rating—Aeroplane class 2 (AIRAT) or
Helicopter—Class 2 (HIRAT) exams.
Experience
You must have at least 500 hours
instructor experience, including at
least 400 hours dual instruction for
the issue of a civil pilot licence or
military wings, and have
recommended at least 10 applicants
for the recreational, private and/or
commercial flight test, of which up
to 3 may be for the recreational
flight test (aeroplanes).
Skill
You must complete the flight test in
the Flight Test Standard—Flight
Air Law 21
Instructor Rating—Aeroplanes,
Helicopters, Aerobatic (TP5537). If you
are subject to follow-up action about
your Flight Test Record under
Section 421.67, you cannot upgrade
from a Class 3 to a Class 2.
Period of Validity
To the first day of the 37th month
after the month the test was
conducted in.
Class 1 -421.72/421.80
Privileges
You may exercise the privileges of a
Class 2 instructor and conduct
ground school and flight training for
instructors.
Prerequisites
For an initial Class 1 Rating, you
must have held a Class 2 in the last
12 months and meet the following
knowledge, experience and skill
requirements.
Knowledge
For aeroplanes, you must, within the
previous 24 months, have obtained
at least 80% in the Flight Instructor
Rating—Instructional Techniques
(AIRAT) exam. For helicopters, you
must, in the previous 12 months,
have obtained at least 80% in the
Flight Instructor Rating—Instructional
Techniques (HIRAT) exam.
Experience
You must have, in aeroplanes, at
least 750 hours of flight instruction,
including at least 600 hours dual
instruction for the issue of a civil
pilot licence or military wings, and
have recommended at least 10
applicants for the recreational,
private and/or commercial flight
test, of which up to 3 may be for the
recreational flight test (aeroplanes).
Skill
You must complete the flight test in
the Flight Test Standard—Flight
Instructor Rating—Aeroplanes,
Helicopters, Aerobatic (TP5537). If you

Private Operator Passenger
Transportation - 604/624
This only concerns large or turbinepowered
pressurized Canadian
aeroplanes used for non-commercial
transport of passengers (i.e.
company aircraft carrying company
personnel only), where they are not
already covered under an FTU or
Commercial Requirements (Part
VII). It does not apply to helicopters.
The idea is to bring some control to
a largely unregulated environment,
and the rules are essentially the same
as those for Commercial Air
Services, including Flight Times &
Duty Hours.
Aircraft Operation - 604.02
You must comply with a private
operator certificate as per 604.05, or
an operator certificate issued under
Part VII.
