rest period starts at 8 in the
evening, the next one must start
between 5 and 11 (pm), and
those for the rest of the week
around 7-9.
·  You get at least 10 hours notice,
free of all duty.
·  You do not get any duties and
are not interrupted between
2200 and 0600 hours.
Most companies use the third. If the
above cannot be complied with, that
is, you get no notice at all, your

maximum duty time is 10 hours, and
the next rest period must be
increased by 5 hours (actually half
the duty time).
Each crew member must be able to
obtain at least 8 consecutive hours
sleep a day while on reserve. You
must be given either 24 hours notice
of the start and duration of the rest
period, which cannot shift more
than 3 hours earlier or later than the
preceding one, nor more than 8
hours in a week, 10 hours notice of
the assignment, with no duty in
them, or no duty time and no
interruptions between 2200 and
0600 local time.
If the above conditions cannot be
complied with, the maximum duty
time is 10 hours, and the subsequent
minimum rest period must be
increased by at least one-half the
length of the preceding duty time.
Controlled Rest on the Flight Deck -
700.23/720.23
Where one pilot is allowed to grab a
few Zs while the other remains alert.
Training
You must receive training in the
program as well as in the general
principles of fatigue and fatigue
countermeasures.
Pre-flight Activities
The PIC must determine if
operational considerations allow rest
on the flight deck, based on
guidelines developed by the
operator. Rest periods will be
planned at a pre-flight briefing to
anticipate and maximize sleep
opportunities and manage alertness.
The briefing can occur in flight, and
must include the choice of rest
sequence, planned and unplanned
wake-up criteria, transfer of control
procedures and co-ordination with
flight attendants.
Pre-rest Period
Activities should take about 5
minutes and include the transfer of
duties, an operational briefing,
completion of physiological needs
(i.e. take a pee), co-ordination with
flight attendants and time to become
comfortable in the flight deck seat.
Rest Period
Only one crew member at a time can
rest while others remain alert,
although you may use an alertness
monitor as a back-up system. The
resting crew member's duties must
be completed by the non-resting
crew members. All crew members
must remain on the flight deck
throughout the rest period, which
can only be up to 45 minutes to
avoid sleep inertia when awakened.
Rest periods can only occur during
cruise and must be completed at
least 30 minutes before planned top
of descent, workload permitting.
More than one sleep opportunity
may be taken by crew members.
Post-rest Period
Unless required due to an abnormal
or emergency situation, you must get
at least 15 minutes without duties
before resuming normal duties, and
an operational briefing.
Long-range Flights - 700.22
Except within Northern Domestic
Airspace, a flight, or a series
terminating more than 4 one-hour
time zones from the departure point
must be limited to 3 sectors and be

followed by a rest period at least
equal to the preceding duty time.
The maximum number of sectors
that may be completed after a
transoceanic sector is one, excluding
one unscheduled technical stop.
Cumulative Times
There are no cumulative limits for
duty hours, only flight times (above).
Right of Way - 602.19
Even when you have right of way,
you must take any necessary action
to avoid collision. Another aircraft
with an emergency gains priority
over you. If you must give way, you
must not pass over or under, or
cross ahead of, the other aircraft
unless you are far enough away not
to create a risk of collision.
When aircraft converge at around
the same altitude, the one from the
right has right-of-way, except that:
·  power-driven, heavier-than-air
aircraft give way to airships,
gliders and balloons
·  airships give way to gliders and
balloons
·  gliders give way to balloons
·  power-driven aircraft give way
to those towing, or with slung
loads.
When two balloons are converging
at different altitudes, the higher one
