engineer may be relieved by a
captain or first officer in the
cruise under 705.107(2).
·  A captain or first officer may be
relieved by a cruise relief pilot if
the latter holds a CPL and is
endorsed on type, holds a
Group 1 IR, is qualified under
705.106, has passed ground and
flight training for a cruise relief
pilot, a cruise relief PPC (see
725.106, Sch III), has completed
annual recurrent ground and
synthetic device training, a
cruise relief line check
conducted by an approved
check pilot, and (if relieving a
captain), the first officer is
designated to act as PIC or is
delegated with the responsibility
for the safe operation of the
aeroplane and holds an ATPL.
The first officer may be relieved
during cruise only.
If you ever have to leave the
controls of a helicopter with the
engine running, do not switch the
hydraulics off, but use the control
locks only, in case the controls
motor by themselves.
Crew Member Briefing
The pre-crew member briefing must
be a joint one involving all members,
or a briefing from the PIC to the incharge
flight attendant, who passes it
to other cabin crew members. With
only one flight attendant, the PIC
must brief that flight attendant.
Subject matter must include (as
appropriate) anticipated weather,
flying conditions, flight time,
altitudes, review of communication,
emergency and safety procedures,

unserviceable equipment or
abnormalities affecting passengers.
Pilot's Compartment
Inspectors producing ID must have
free and uninterrupted access to the
pilot's compartment. The Inspector
may choose the most suitable seat.

Minimum Crew - 723.86
Single Pilot IFR
You must have at least 1,000 hours,
to include, for a multi, 100 hours on
multi-engined aeroplanes, as well as
50 hours of simulated or actual flight
in IMC, and 50 hours on type.
The PPC must be on the type flown,
or one grouped for PPC renewals,
and must include knowledge of the
auto-pilot, performance of normal
and emergency procedures without
assistance, passenger briefing and
use of the auto-pilot. Flight in
pressurized aeroplanes must be at or
below FL 250. A pilot's single pilot
proficiency is transferable between
similar operators.
A helicopter must be multi-engined
and certified for single-pilot IFR.
The pilot must have at least 1,000
hours on helicopters, to include 100
PIC on multis, as well as 50 hours
simulated or actual IMC, and total
50 hours on type.
The PPC must be done in the type
or an approved simulator, to include
knowledge and use of the auto-pilot,
and normal and emergency
procedures without assistance.
A single-PPC is transferable between
operators using the same type.
PPC - 723.88, 724.108
Must be done by a Transport
Canada inspector or approved
company check pilot under Schedule
I for aeroplanes or Schedule II for
helicopters, in the aircraft or
approved simulator, covering the
aircraft, its systems and components,
proper control of airspeed, direction,
altitude, attitude and configuration
under the operating manual, Flight
Manual, Ops Manual, SOPs, check
list, etc. Also, departure, enroute and
arrival instrument procedures,
adherence to approved procedures
and qualities of airmanship when
selecting a course of action.
Procedures not approved in the
flight sim must be done in the
aircraft. PIC and 2IC checks must be
done in the applicable seats.
If you pass the PPC, your IR is
renewed as well, so IR manoeuvres
must be included if relevant.
If you renew a PPC or competency
check within 90 days of its expiry,
the validity period is extended by 24
or 12 months, respectively, so you
can get an extra three months.
PPCs must also be done on a
combination of a Level 4 or higher
training device and a full flight sim,
or a combination of a Level 6 or
higher and the aeroplane, if a sim is
available in North America.
For turbo-jets with 50 or more seats,
PPCs must be done on a full flight
sim, or a combination of one with a
Level 4 (or higher) training device
located anywhere.
The level of checking on a sim must
be part of the training program
approval for each type. Procedures
not approved for the device must be
Air Law 45
completed in the aeroplane. The
