·  Remote Aerodrome Advisory Service
(RAAS). Weather, runways,
NOTAMs, PIREPs, traffic, etc.
As the office where the
information is coming from is
remote, you are responsible for
mandatory procedures. A Remote
Communications Outlet (RCO)
may be involved (below).
·  Vehicle Control Service (VCS).
Controls vehicles on
manoeuvring area when the
tower is closed, or during FSS
hours when there isn't one. Not
available with RAAS.
·  Flight Plan Service. Includes
weather and NOTAMs, and
itineraries. Helps you collect the
information for a safe flight.

·  Surface Weather Observing Service.
Collects, disseminates surface
weather data.
·  Aviation Weather Information
Service (AWIS). Tailored for
preflight and enroute stages, to
help decisions.
·  Aviation Weather Briefing Service
(AWBS). An interpretive
preflight and enroute briefing
service provided by certain FSSs
within a region. The service is
toll-free, and you can expect to
see satellite and radar images.
People are trained to cover all
weather problems. Long range
cover is available, too. In the
CFS, this is signified as W1.
·  VFR Alerting Service. Notifies
SAR with communications
searches if VFR flight plans or
itineraries are not closed on
time, or overdue reports are not
received.
·  Aeronautical Broadcast Service.
ATIS, weather broadcasts, etc.
·  Navigation Assistance Service. VDF
service in emergency, potential
or otherwise, or on request.
Others depend on facilities.
·  Navigation Aids Monitoring Service.
Checks out VORs, ADFs, etc.
·  NOTAM & PIREP service.
·  Fixed Telecommunications Service.
The FSS will be connected to a
larger system so information
can be spread easily between
ground stations and aircraft.
·  Paid Communications Service.
Private companies can use their
facilities, too.
Most FSSs are open 24 hours. Wind
direction and speed is given to the
nearest 10° and 5 knots.
Remote Communications Outlets
RCOs are VHF transmitters
established miles away from the
operating agency. They are used for
aerodromes without much traffic,
and therefore do not justify the cost
of a full time FSS specialist. When
communicating with one, you will
actually be talking to a specialist in a
larger airfield somewhere else.
Where the distance is long, the
comms link might be a telephone
line, as found in a Dial-Up Remote
Communications Outlet (DRCO).
To activate it, press the transmit
button 4 times, with not more than 1
second between presses. You should
hear the normal sounds of a
telephone call being established.
Then a plastic voice will say "link
established", after which you treat it
as a normal radio conversation, with
some delays between responses. The
plastic voice will say "call
terminated" when you disconnect.
You can get Flight Information Service
Enroute (FISE) on the enroute
frequency and RAAS on the MF.
Clearances, Instructions, etc
You must comply with any clearance
received and acknowledged. If you
don't like it, you should say so at the
time, since an acknowledgement
without further comment is taken as
such. Clearances are valid only in
controlled airspace, and there will be
some form of the word "clear" in the
text to help identify them.
You must also comply with
instructions in the same way, unless
Air Law 105
aircraft safety is a factor. An
instruction will be readily
identifiable, but the word "instruct"
may not be included.
Control is based on known traffic only,
so you are still responsible for safe
procedures and good judgement.
Information about flight conditions
is meant as assistance or reminders.
Approach Clearances
When direct controller-pilot
communications (DCCP) are active,
ATC will normally advise pilots of
the ceiling, visibility, wind, runway,
altimeter setting, approach aids and
conditions, etc. immediately before
or after descent clearance is given. If
you tell them you have the current
ATIS, they will only give you the
altimeter setting.
