Class B and Class C External Loads
Required if you have not received
training for the Class of load, or
have not carried one in the previous
24 months. Must include restrictions
related to external load operations
over built-up areas, preparation of
loads, rigging procedures and
attachment of loads, steps to be
taken before starting operations,
including flight and ground crew

briefings and instructions, inspection
of suspension cables and pre-flight
checking of jettison system,
precautions related to load
aerodynamics, including oscillation
and carriage of unweighted cables,
training in the pick-up, departure,
approach and delivery of
representative Class B loads, flight
training in manoeuvring with Class C
loads and applicable external load
flight manual supplements.
Class D External Loads
Approved initial and annual
recurrent training is required,
including the applicable flight
manual supplement or airworthiness
approvals, including Weight and
balance calculation, method of
loading, rigging and attaching the
load and pre-flight procedures,
operational requirements, including
calculation of one engine inoperative
performance, communications
procedures and operational
restrictions, steps to be taken before
commencing operations, including
flight and ground crew briefings and
instructions and pre-flight inspection
requirements and flight training with
representative loads including (as
applicable) precision hovering in and
out of ground effect, including
vertical reference manoeuvring, pickup,
departure, approach and delivery
of loads, simulated emergencies and
malfunctions.
Embarking and Disembarking People
Ground Training requires briefing
procedures, including loading of
equipment, calculation of weight and
C of G limits, including changes.
Flight Training must include
precision hovering at gross weight
with C of G at lateral limits, and
while people disembark, load
equipment and embark.
Ground Technical Type Training
Ensures you know all about the
aircraft systems and normal,
malfunction and emergency
procedures. Must include systems
operation and limitations as per the
Flight Manual, operating manual and
SOPs, use and operation of
navigation and ancillary equipment,
equipment differences between
types, operation of normal and
emergency exits and evacuation
procedures, aircraft performance and
limitations, weight and balance
procedures, and servicing and
ground handling procedures.
Aircraft Servicing & Ground Handling
Must include fuelling (types of fuel,
oil and fluids, and checking of
them), use of tow bars and allowable
nose wheel deflection, use and
installation of protective covers, and
procedures for cold weather (deicing
and stuff).
Synthetic Flight Training Devices
You can either have a Full Flight
Simulator (FSS) or Flight Training
Device (FTD), which must be
approved (see Aeroplane and Rotorcraft
Simulator Manual), as must the FTD
Training Program. It must be as
accurate as possible with regard to
the aircraft, with additional training
on any differences, as required.
Surface Contamination Training
Required for all ops people, to
include the responsibility of the PIC
and other ops personnel, regulations
about icing, weather conducive to
ice, frost and snow contamination,
inspection before flight and removal

of contamination, in-flight icing
recognition and hazards related to
critical-surface contamination by ice,
frost and snow.
MEL Training
Must be done every year, to cover
changes. For maintenance personnel,
must include relevant sections of the
Maintenance Control Manual,
placarding of inoperative equipment,
maintenance release and any other
related procedures. For pilots and
operational control personnel, must
include the purpose and use of an
MEL, elementary maintenance and
MEL procedures and responsibility
of the PIC.
Dangerous Goods Training
As required under Transportation of
Dangerous Goods Regulations.
High Altitude Training
Required above 13000 feet ASL
before first assignment on a
pressurized aircraft and every 3 years
thereafter, to include physiological
phenomena, such as respiration,
