If you are approaching another
aircraft head-on, and there is a risk
of collision, you must both alter
heading to the right.
An aircraft being overtaken has the
right of way and, if you are
overtaking, whether climbing,
descending or level, you must alter
heading to the right, until you have
entirely passed and are clear.
You must give way to an aircraft that
is landing or about to land, whether
you are on the ground or in the air.
If landing, you must give way to
lower aircraft that are also landing.
Such aircraft must not overtake or
cut in front of you.
There must be no apparent risk of
collision with any aircraft, person,
vessel, vehicle or structure in your
take-off or landing path.

Aircraft or vessels coming from the
right have the right-of-way.
If you are approaching another
aircraft or vessel head-on, you must
alter heading to the right.
Aircraft or vessels being overtaken
have the right of way, and overtakers
must alter heading to keep well clear.
Aerodromes & Airports
An aerodrome is generally any place
for landing aircraft that fits the
official definition, which is, broadly,
being set apart for the purpose, and
includes any necessary buildings. An
airport is an aerodrome with an
aviation document in force, so it has to
meet a higher level of safety. It
would typically be used for
passenger-carrying commercial
flights, for example. It is also
required for those in built-up areas.
Full details of handy places to land,
including heliports (see below) are in
the Canada Flight Supplement, or CFS,
which you need a good knowledge
of for your commercial ride. An

aerodrome or airport listed in it that
does not need previous permission
for use is for public use. Where
permission is required, you either
need to get it first, or just provide
prior notice, so they can get the sheep
off the runway (actually, it's so they
can get the latest information, but
you know what I mean).
You may not :
·  walk, stand, drive, park
anything, or cause an
obstruction, without permission
from the operators or ATC.
·  tow aircraft on active areas at
night, without wingtip, tail and
anti-collision lights, or light
from the towing vehicle.
·  park, or otherwise leave an
aircraft, on an active area at
night without wingtip, tail and
anti-collision lights, or lanterns
suspended from the wingtips,
tail and nose.
·  operate a vessel on, or cause
obstruction on the surface of, a
water area that must be kept
clear, when ordered to leave, or
not approach it.
·  remove, deface, extinguish or
interfere with markers,
markings, lights or signals for
air navigation, without
permission from the operator
and ATC.
·  display a marker, marking, sign,
light or signal likely to be
hazardous by causing glare or
confusion with, or preventing
clear sight of, another one.
·  allow a bird or animal in your
custody to be unrestrained
inside an aerodrome or airport,
except to control others.
·  discharge a firearm within or
into an aerodrome or airport
without permission .
·  display a marker, marking, light
or signal that may cause a
person to believe a place is an
aerodrome when it is not.
Fire Prevention - 301.09, 302.11
Except for flarepots, smoking,
sparks and open flames are not
allowed on an apron, an aircraft
loading bridge, a gallery or balcony
near an apron, or where a fire hazard
could be created, unless during
maintenance or servicing with
permission from the aerodrome
operator. Smoking, may be allowed
in an enclosed building or shelter on
an apron if a fire hazard is not likely.
Registration - 301.03
Aerodromes are registered when their
information is in the CFS or Water
Aerodrome Supplement. Changes must
be notified immediately.
Wind Direction Indicator - 301.06
Must be a conspicuously-coloured
truncated cone, visible from 300m
(1,000 feet) above and illuminated at
night, unless the wind can be
determined by radio or other means,
like smoke or wind lines on water.
They must be removed if an
aerodrome is closed permanently.
A dry TC windsock (as used at
airports) is horizontal at 15 kts, 5°
