Kyrenia, or Girne as it is known locally, is a bustling harbour town, and
the livelier of North Cyprus’ resorts, situated in a stunning location
with a backdrop of mountains and the sparkling waters of the
Mediterranean lying before it. High above the town is the imposing
ruined castle of St. Hilarion, appearing from a distance like part of the
mountain itself. The attractive Venetian harbour, dominated to one
side by Kyrenia Castle, which now houses the shipwreck museum, is
the focal point of Kyrenia and the ideal place to enjoy a leisurely lunch
of fresh fish, watching the local fisherman ply their trade, or relax in
the evening with a brandy sour - the local cocktail - and just watch the
world go by.
You will also enjoy exploring the winding back streets behind the
harbour which are a fascinating maze of small shops and restaurants.
Small villages sprawl along the coast to either side of Kyrenia, where
the coastline is laced with golden sandy beaches and rocky coves, and
the clear waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Further
inland, winding roads lead to villages nestling in the foothills of the
mountains, surrounded by olive and citrus groves. Perhaps the best
known of these is Bellapais, the village which Lawrence Durrell made
famous in ‘Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’, and which has probably changed
little since his time, where you will often find artists sketching in the
shade of the ruins of this beautiful abbey.
