The sleepy town of Famagusta, known locally as Gazimagusa, was
once a busy port, a centre of commerce for the Lusignans and a
stopping-off point for Richard the Lionheart’s crusaders en-route
to the Holy Lands. Much of the ancient city wall remains intact,
with two of the original city gates and formidable citadel known as
Othello’s Tower, from where Shakespeare is rumoured to have gained
inspiration.
Close by are the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Salamis, believed
to have been founded by Teucer on his return from the Trojan
Wars, where the remains of the baths, gymnasium and the huge
amphitheatre are some of the most impressive to be seen in the
Mediterranean. Look closely and you will be rewarded by glimpses of
exquisite mosaics still partially covered by the soil of ages or hidden in
archways, invisible to all but the most observant.
The area around Famagusta is renowned for its golden sandy beaches,
which stretch for miles along the coast. The hotels that we feature are
situated virtually on the beach providing the ideal location for those
seeking a holiday in the sun.
Further along the East coast at the start of the Karpaz peninsula
is the pretty fishing village of Bogaz, perfect for those who want
complete relaxation in a tranquil location. The Karpaz itself is well
worth exploring for its deserted sandy beaches, wild nature and ruined
churches.
