C. Procedure

(1) Each time you go into a fuel tank (AMM 28-10-00/201), you must examine the fuel tank very carefully before you close it.
(a) If you applied some sealant, you must clean the fuel tank and examine it before you close the fuel tank.

(2) Do these steps to close the repaired fuel tank:
(a) Remove all coverplates, plugs, and equipment used in tests to isolate leakage.

(b) Remove all tools, solvent containers, rags, and brushes used for sealant repairs.
NOTE: Keep a written record of all tools, equipment, material,
____ and persons when they go into and go out of the fuel tank. Before you close the fuel tank, make sure the record shows there are no unwanted items in the tank.
WARNING: GROUND ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT AND THE HOSES USED IN THE FUEL
_______ TANK OR ADJACENT TO THE OPEN FUEL TANK. IF YOU DO NOT GROUND ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT AND HOSES, AN EXPLOSION CAN OCCUR.
(c)
Use a vacuum to clean the repaired fuel tank fully to remove unwanted particles and pieces of the used sealant.
(d)
If the fuel tank is wet, rub the wet area clean with cotton rags or sponges.
(e)
Examine all the repair sealant and the finish to make sure you applied it correctly.
(f)
Replace all the rib braces or the structure that you removed for access.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE ALL UNWANTED PARTICLES AND MATERIALS
_______ FROM THE FUEL TANK. IF THE UNWANTED MATERIALS COLLECT IN THE FUEL TANK, THEY CAN CAUSE A BLOCKAGE OF THE PUMPS.
(g)
Make sure there is not a blockage in the fuel and water drain holes and paths.
(h)
Make one last check in the fuel tank to make sure you removed all particles and unwanted materials.
(i)
Install all of the tank access doors that you removed.

C. Procedure

(1) Do not refuel the fuel tanks that you repaired until the finish is dry (cured) (AMM 28-11-00/701).
NOTE: With usual conditions the cure time for the finish is a

minimum of 12 hours at 65°F.

(2) If the you repaired the fuel tank but did not apply the finish, you can refuel the fuel tank when the sealant is tack-free.
(a) Do not point the fuel flow against the new sealant.

Examine the external leak area regularly for 1 hour.
(a) Make sure there are no fuel leaks.

9. Temporary Repair of Leaks Through Self-Sealing Rivets

A. General
(1)
Self-sealing rivets are frequently used in skin panels in the fuel tank area. If you find a leak at a rivet, you must replace the rivet to make a permanent repair. You can make a temporary repair if you refer to the Structural Repair Manual to make a permanent repair when you go into the tank.
