 D. Correctly Keep Sealants That Are Not Mixed

 (1)  Keep all sealants at temperatures between 50°F and 80°F (10°C and 26.7°C).

 CAUTION: DISCARD ALL SEALANT OR CORROSION RESISTANT FINISH THAT DOES NOT
_______ APPLY SMOOTHLY. INCORRECTLY APPLIED SEALANT OR FINISH CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (2)  Do this test if you kept sealant that is not mixed for more than six months:
 (a)  
Do the procedure "Mix the Sealant" for the sealant that you kept.

 (b)  
Apply a sample of this sealant to a surface that is not important.

 (c)  
Find the time necessary for this sample of sealant to dry until it is tack-free.

 (d)  
Compare this time to the tack-free time in Fig. 801 or the manufacturer's specifications.

 (e)  
If this time is more than the maximum permitted time, discard the sealant.

 E. Mix the Sealant

 (1)  Mix only the quantity of sealant necessary for the task that you must do.
 NOTE: Identify the necessary sealant for the repair before you
____ mix it. The use of premeasured Semkits is recommended, specially for small repairs. You can purchase these Semkits from the vendor.

Make sure all of the equipment that you use to mix the sealant is clean.

 (3)  
Obey the manufacturer's instructions to mix the sealant compounds.

 NOTE: Always use the accelerator material with the base
____ material from the same repair kit. Do not mix the materials of one repair kit with the materials of a different kit. Do not use more than the necessary time to mix the sealant. If you use too much time to mix the sealant, you will not have sufficient time to apply the sealant.

 (4)  If you do not use a premeasured Semkit, do these steps to mix the sealant:
 (a)  
Put the necessary quantity of base material to be used on the scale and balance it with weights.

 (b)  
Add to the weights more weight to give the necessary accelerator material-to-base material ratio identified on the manufacturer's sealant container.

 NOTE: You can mix BMS 5-26 Type II, Class B-2 with an
____ accelerator-to-base ratio range of 8.4:100 to 16.8:100 by volume or 10:100 to 20:100 by weight. The 10:100 ratio is usual for B-2 sealant. The 20:100 ratio gives a material with an application time of approximately 1/2 hour and a cure time of approximately 6 hours at 77°F and 50% relative humidity. It is necessary to mix these materials with a machine.
