Attach the strongback to the midflap (Fig. 402).

 WARNING: MAKE SURE THE SPREADER-BAR IS ATTACHED TO HOLES MARKED
_______ "INSTL-REMOVAL POSITION" ON THE STRONGBACK. THE FLAP WILL MOVE RAPIDLY WHEN THE FLAP IS ROLLED OFF OF THE TRACK. YOU CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (e)  Do these steps to attach the load positioner and the spreader bar to the strongbacks (Fig. 402). 1) Follow the instructions on the instruction plate on the
 spreader bar to put the adjust-a-leg sling into the correct position. Position the adjust-a-leg sling per the instruction plate.

 2) Move the counter weight to make the spreader bar level. 3) Attach the load positioner and the spreader bar to the strongbacks.

 (3)  
Remove the outboard flap (Fig. 401).

 (a)  
Remove the four bolts (51) and washers (50) which connect the gimbal caps (47), ball screw nut, and gimbal.

 NOTE: The nuts (49) and retainers (48) stay in the gimbal.

 (b)  
Remove the gimbal caps from the ball screw nut. Move the ball screw away from the gimbal.

 (c)  
Remove the nuts (14) and washers (13) from the support pins which hold the forward bogies to the carriages on the two flap tracks

 WARNING: MAKE SURE THE FORWARD BOGIE DOES NOT HOLD THE WEIGHT OF
_______ THE FLAP BEFORE THE SUPPORT PIN IS REMOVED. THE FLAP CAN MOVE SUDDENLY. PERSONNEL CAN BE INJURED OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGED.
 (d)  Manually move the flap until all of the rollers on the forward bogie can be turned freely.
 NOTE: This will remove the weight of the flap from the forward
____
 bogie.

 (e)  
Remove the support pins.

 (f)  
Measure and write down the thickness of the washers (12) when they are removed.

 (g)  
Remove the bushings (15 and 16) from the bolt holes in the bogies.

 (h)  
Move the flap assembly (1) aft.

 NOTE: This will permit the aft bogies to move off the flap
____
 tracks.

 Make sure that the flap is correctly held during the removal. The flap weighs approximately 1300 pounds (590 kg).

 (4)  
Remove the support tools from the midflap and the aftflap.

 (5)  
If a forward bogie is damaged and must be removed, move the forward bogie aft and off of the flap track.

 G. If a replacement flap or midflap will be installed, do these steps:
 S 014-022
 (1)  Remove the access panels 587DT and 587HT (on the left wing) or 687DT and 687HT (on the right wing) above the aft end of each main carriage spindle.
 NOTE: The access panels are on the top surface of the midflap.

 (2)  Measure the thickness of the shims between the carriage bearing support fitting and the midflap frame.
