Engine Oil Analysis

 (1)  Do the Karl Fischer ASTMD-1744 Water Analysis to analyze the engine oil for water content:
 (a)  
Get a 4 oz. or 100 ml sample of engine oil.

 (b)  
Do the Karl Fischer ASTMD-1744 Water Analysis to find the water content in the engine oil.

 (c)  
If water content is more than 800 parts per million (ppm) by weight or volume, replace the engine oil with uncontaminated engine oil.

 (2)  Do the ASTMD-664 Total Acid Number (TAN) Analysis to analyze the engine oil for acid content:
 (a)  
Get a 4 oz. or 100 ml sample of engine oil.

 (b)  
Do the ASTMD-664 TAN (titrated to PH 11.0) Anaylsis to compare the acid content of the engine oil.

(c)  Find the TAN for a sample of new engine oil of the same type which is used to service the engine.
 NOTE: The PWA 521 synthetic oils are different in TAN by brand

 and manufacturer.

 (d)  
Find the TAN for the engine oil sample.

 (e)  
If the TAN for the engine oil sample is more than 0.2 higher than the TAN for the new engine oil, the engine oil is degraded and must be replaced with new engine oil with a satisfactory TAN.

If the water or acid content was more than the limits, replace the engine oil with the steps in the Oil System Preservation procedure, and operate the engine with the steps above to distribute the new engine oil through the oil system.

Oil System Preservation

 CAUTION: IT IS RECOMMENDED THIS PROCEDURE BE DONE IN A TEST CELL OR
_______ SIMILAR CLEAN AND PROTECTED AREA TO MINIMIZE NOISE, SAFETY HAZARDS AND POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO ROTATING OR AIR-FLOWING MACHINERY. CHOCKS OR SIMILAR RESTRAINT OF TRANSPORT STANDS ARE ALSO RECOMMENDED.
 (1)  
Drain the engine oil:

 (a)  
Remove the magnetic chip detectors and valve assemblies from the main gearbox and the engine oil tank (AMM 79-21-10/401). 1) Let the engine oil drain into a container.

 (b)  
Remove the main oil filter (AMM 79-21-05/401).

 1)  Let the engine oil drain into a container for approximately 30 minutes.

 (c)  
Install a new main oil filter (AMM 79-21-05/401).

 (d)  
Install the magnetic chip detectors and valve assemblies in the main gearbox and engine oil tank (AMM 79-21-10/401).

 

 (2)  
Fill the engine oil tank (AMM 12-13-01/301).

 (3)  
If you cannot start and operate the engine, motor the engine with the starter at a starter inlet air pressure of 15 psig (103.4 kPa) minimum.

 (a) Make sure the fan (LPC) turns while you motor the engine.
