C. The quantity of engine bleed air is controlled and put through the inner side of the inlet cowl to the leading edge to remove the ice. A thermal anti-icing (TAI) duct supplies the bleed air to a spray duct manifold at the inlet cowl lip. The spray duct manifold goes fully around the lip of the inlet cowl. The engine bleed air is let out of the pressure relief vent for the inlet cowl at the lower aft edge of the inlet cowl.
D. The pressure relief vent for the inlet cowl is attached at the forward edge and latched at the aft edge. The pressure relief vent will automatically open to release pressure if failure of the TAI duct occurs.
E. A puddle drain in the lower section of the inlet cowl drains liquids which have collected on the inner side of the airflow surface.
F. The access panels are given on the external surface of the inlet cowl for the EEC inlet total pressure/temperature (PT2/TT2) probe and TAI duct. The access panels are attached to the inlet structure with screws and nutplates.
G. A kevlar containment belt for the fan blade is wound around the outer side of the inner acoustic panel.
3. Fan Cowl Panels (Fig. 3)

A. The left and right fan cowl panels are on the engine fan case and are aligned with the inlet cowl and thrust reverser. Each fan cowl panel is attached with hinges on the strut at three locations and latch together at the bottom with three tension latches.
B. The fan cowl panels are a composite structure of nomex honeycomb and kevlar-graphite. The approximate dimensions and weight of the fan cowl panels are: 108 inches (274 cm) in diameter, 34 inches (86 cm) in length and weigh 65 pounds (29 kgs) each.
C. The fan cowl panels are made of fire-resistant material to prevent fire in other areas of the power plant. The components installed internally are explosion resistant and no more fire protection is necessary.
D. A pressure relief door on the left fan cowl panel opens automatically to release pressure if failure of the thermal anti-icing (TAI) duct occurs. The pressure relief door is attached with hinges and latched.
E. Two hold-open rods, attached on the inner side of each fan cowl panel, hold the fan cowl panel in the open position. The lower end of each hold-open rod is released from the stowed position and attached to a receiver bracket. The two hold-open rods must be fully extended to stay locked in the open position.
4. Core Cowl Panels (Fig. 4)

A. The left and right core cowl panels are on the engine turbine case and are aligned with the thrust reverser and turbine exhaust sleeve. Each core cowl panel is attached with hinges to the strut at four locations, and latch together at the bottom with four tension latches.
B. The core cowl panels are made of aluminum. The approximate dimensions of the core cowl panels are 70 inches (178 cm) in diameter and 55 inches (140 cm) in length. The left core cowl panel weighs approximately 130 pounds (59 kgs) and the right core cowl panel weighs approximately 110 pounds (50 kgs).

C. There are two pressure relief doors on each core cowl panel which open automatically to release high pressure if failure of a duct occurs. On the left core cowl panel, the top pressure relief door gives access to the oil tank and the lower pressure relief door gives access to the Integrated Drive Generator System (IDGS). The pressure relief doors are attached with hinges and latched.
