B. Remove the Bottom Cowling

WARNING: YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU TURN THE PROPELLER. MAKE SURE THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH IS SET TO “OFF”. SET THE THROTTLE TO “IDLE” AND THE MIXTURE CONTROL TO “LEAN CUT-OFF”.
(1) Turn the propeller backwards until the top blade is vertical.
(2) Release the quick-release fasteners which hold the bottom cowling. Hold the bottom cowling!
(3) Remove the bottom cowling: S Lower the rear of the cowling. S Move the cowling down and aft. S Move the cowling clear of the exhaust and away from the airplane. Take great care not to catch the cowling on the propeller! Take care not catch the cowling on the exhaust.

3. Install the Engine Cowlings
A. Install the Bottom Cowling

(1) Examine the bottom cowling. Make sure that : S The cowling is clean. S The cowling is not damaged. S The quick-release fasteners are not missing/damaged. Repair any damage. Replace missing/damaged fasteners.
(2) Lift the cowling into position: S Move the cowling into position around the exhaust outlet. S Move the cowling upwards. S Locate the front of the cowling over the injector air inlet. S Lift the back of the cowling into position. S Tighten the quick-release fasteners. Take care not to catch the cowling on the exhaust outlet. Take great care not to catch the cowling on the propeller!

B. Install the Top Cowling

(1) Examine the top cowling. Make sure that : S The cowling is clean. S The cowling is not damaged. S The quick-release fasteners are not missing/damaged. Repair any damage. Replace missing/damaged fasteners.
(2) Move the top cowling into position over the engine.
(3) Gently pull the edges of the cowling apart and lower the cowling into position.
(4) Tighten the quick-release fasteners.
4. Cleaning and Painting
A. Clean the Cowling

(1) Wash the outer surface with a mixture of water and a mild detergent. Obey the detergent manufacturer’s instructions.
(2) Wash the inner surface with a mixture of water and a mild detergent. Obey the detergent manufacturer’s instructions.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE POLISH CONTAINING SILICONE. SILICONE MAKES GFRP REPAIR DIFFICULT.
(3) Polish the outer surface with wax polish. Obey the polish manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use silicone polish.

B. Paint the Inside of the Cowling
This Paragraph gives the data for painting the inside of the engine cowlings with fire protection paint. Refer to Section 51-20 for repairs and painting the outside of the cowlings.

(1) Clean the inside of the cowling.
(2) Make the area rough for painting. Use 150-320 grade wet and dry paper.
WARNING: DO NOT GET ACETONE ON YOUR SKIN. ACETONE CAN CAUSE SKIN DISEASE. WARNING: DO NOT BREATHE ACETONE FUMES. ACETONE FUMES CAN CAUSE ILLNESS. CAUTION: REMOVE ACETONE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FROM GFRP. ACETONE CAN CAUSE THE RESIN TO SOFTEN AND FAIL.
