crosstrack from the selected crosstrack, the system will provide
steering to fly the selected crosstrack, and the HSI will be referenced
to the parallel (offset) course.
Vertical Navigation (VNAV)
Two VNAV pages with nine VNAV waypoints are available under the
VNAV function key. Up to eight VNAV waypoints are automatically
prefilled in reference to flight plan waypoints. Waypoints not on the
flight plan cannot be accepted.
Additional VNAV features include a computed Top-of-Descent,
Target Vertical Speed, and Vertical-Direct-To. For the initial VNAV
leg, flight path angle in degrees is displayed under the Target
Vertical Speed data field.
Holding Patterns
Holding patterns may be programmed at any waypoint on or off the
flight plan or are stored in the navigation data base as part SID,
STAR and approach procedures. If defined at a fix on the flight plan,
the pattern may be either armed (ARM HOLDING) or directly
activated (DTO HOLD). If the fix is not on the flight plan, the hold
may only be directly activated. When armed, the aircraft will
continue along the current flight plan, and when the hold fix is
reached, holding will automatically commence. If the hold is directly
activated, the aircraft will proceed from present position direct to the
holding fix and automatically perform the appropriate entry to the
pattern (parallel, direct or teardrop). Once established in the pattern,
the FMS will fly the correct legs, compensating for existing wind
conditions. Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) over the holding fix is
constantly displayed.
Terminal Area Procedures
The FMS can fly published SIDs and STARs with procedural legs such
as heading-to-radial, heading-to-altitude, course-from-fix-to-DMEdistance,
DME-arcs and fifteen additional leg types. SIDs and STARs
can be easily linked into a flight plan by selecting from menus of
procedures available at the departure and destination airports.

Approach Mode
An FMS approach mode provides the operator with ILS-like
guidance while flying FMS approaches. During an FMS approach,
the system provides signals like those of an ILS for flight director or
autopilot coupled approaches. Altitude restrictions may be entered if
vertical guidance is desired.
VOR, RNAV, TACAN, GPS, NDB, ILS, LOC and BC approaches
may be accessed directly from the navigation data. GPS and NDB
approaches can only be flown using GPS, whereas VOR, RNAV and
TACAN approaches may be flown as GPS overlay. ILS approaches
can be linked to the flight plan, however they can only be actively
flown if the aircraft installation includes an advanced EFIS, which is
compatible with nav-to-nav captures (e.g., Collins APS-85/86, EFIS
B4/C14/E4). LOC and BC approaches will use the raw localizer data
for lateral steering, and baro altitude VNAV for vertical deviation.
Approaches can also be defined by the pilot by entering the
approach waypoints and the reference navaid. VOR, RNAV,
TACAN, ILS, LOC, BC and VFR FMS approaches can be defined.
There are no provisions for pilot-defined GPS or NDB approaches.
Data Bases
A self-contained worldwide NAV Data Base stored in non-volatile
memory, provides the FMS with information on over 100,000
waypoints, navaids, airports and over 12,000 SIDs, STARs and
Approaches. Additionally, the data base has the capability to store
up to approximately 200 pilot defined routes utilizing up to 2,500
legs. The operator may choose from a worldwide data base with
airports of >2000 foot or >4000 foot runways. In addition a special
Eastern Region Helicopter (ERHC) data base exists for helicopter
operators.

Company Data Base
A company routes data base can be created using Universal’s
Offline Flight Planning Program. A total of up to 2500 routes and
250,000 route elements may be stored. Each route will consist of at
least one but not more than 98 legs (route elements). Route
elements reference waypoints, airways and terminal area
procedures (SIDs, STARs and approaches) from the navigation data
base by use of reference pointers. Company routes can be given
names of up to eight characters in length.
Navigation Data Base
A subscription service is available through Universal Avionics
Systems Corporation which provides navigation data base updates
on a 28 day cycle. The updates are formatted on 3 1/2 inch
diskettes and are loaded into the FMS via the Data Transfer Unit.
