panel display. The high resolution display provides alpha-numeric
characters, icons and graphics capabilities to facilitate on screen
data recognition. This display allows for data display on eleven lines
with 24 characters each in two different character sizes. Graphic
displays for special photo, search and surveillance flight patterns are
provided. The display also supports NTSC RGB format video.
A UNS-1B may use the standard Super CDU, which only contains
five colors (green, light green, orange, yellow and red), and has no
video.
FMS Keyboard
The full alphanumeric keyboard contains dedicated function keys
and, when used in conjunction with the ten line select keys, provides
the operator with all the controls necessary to communicate with the
internal navigation computer and all associated sensors. The
keyboard allows manual data entry, system mode selection and
control (selection and deselection) of navigation sensors.
FMS Navigation Computer
The FMS contains the systems powerful central processing unit (nav
computer), navigation sensor interface circuits, flight guidance
system interface and the navigation data base. The unit processes
data from DME, VOR, Air Data, Fuel Flow and up to five long range
navigation sensors. A radar joystick input can also be
accommodated. At installation, the system is configured with the
number and type of long range navigation sensors, which will
optimize the FMS system to the aircraft’s specific requirements. The
long range nav sensors act in addition to the multi-channel scanning
DME and VOR sensing capability integrated into the basic circuit.
When the FMS is interfaced with Collins Pro Line 4 Avionics System
(e.g., Learjet 60), an EFIS Radar Panel (ERP) is also installed.
Refer to the applicable Pro Line 4 Supplement for ERP details. The
ERP is not required when the FMS is interfaced to Collins Pro Line
4000 (e.g., Falcon 2000, IAI Astra SPX, SAAB 2000, etc.).

Configuration Module
A configuration module is installed on the FMS rear connector.
Once it is programmed at the time of installation, it will define all the
aircraft interfaces unique to the particular installation.
Short Range Sensors
DME
The FMS's unique auto-scanning DME-DME-DME positioning
function uses the internal navigation data base to continually map
the stations surrounding the aircraft (VORTACs, DMEs, ILS-DMEs,
LOC-DMEs, TACANs). The FMS then automatically tunes and
reads these, one every four seconds, utilizing the blind channel of an
external digital DME or Universal's Radio Reference Sensor (VOR,
DME, TACAN). Range information to all responding DMEs within
approximately 250 nautical miles of the FMS position are corrected
for slant range error and are then compared with those computed
from the nav database to verify reasonableness and to ensure DME
position integrity is maintained.
Flights, which never leave areas of multiple DME coverage, can
expect exceptional position accuracies. Over-water flights will retain
DME accuracy long into the flight, re-establishing this same
accuracy well before landfall as DMEs are again received.
VOR
The aircraft's digital VOR receiver or Universal's Radio Reference
Sensor provides the FMS with azimuth information from the
referenced VOR navaid. This azimuth data combined with the
scanning DME distances, provides accurate navigation information
for the FMS systems throughout the enroute, terminal and approach
modes of operation in accordance with the criteria set forth in AC 20-
130A when within range of the required ground based navaids.

Radio Reference Sensor (RRS)
Universal's Radio Reference Sensor (RRS) functions as a multichannel
DME/TACAN receiver/transmitter and VOR receiver, able to
provide DME, VOR and TACAN data simultaneously to two FMS
systems. The RRS provides the required navigation information via
an ARINC 429 data bus without interfering with the aircraft's existing
radios. RRS operation is fully automatic requiring no pilot
intervention.
Doppler
The FMS supports two types of Doppler Sensors: the RACAL 91 and
the ASN-137. These are mostly used for measuring sea current in
search and rescue applications.
Long Range Sensors
The FMS can be interfaced with six types of long range navigation
sensors: Loran C Sensor (LCS), Omega/VLF Sensors (OSS), Inertial
Reference Sensors (IRS), GPS, Omega/VLF (OSS),
GPS/Omega/VLF (GPOSS) and GPS/IRS.
