Under conditions of extreme cold (from 0° C to -50° C) barometric
altimetry will contain errors, which result in the actual aircraft altitude
being lower than that indicated by the altimeter. Some countries
(e.g., Canada, Norway, etc.) have procedures defined whereby the
pilot must refer to a table of information relative to landing airport
elevation and temperature, and derive altitude corrections which are
then added to charted approach altitudes. The feature described in
this section automates that process and relieves the pilot of this
manual task.
For the FMS to compute Temperature Compensated Altitudes, all of
the following conditions must be met on the TEMP COMP page
• An airport temperature must be entered.
• An airport elevation must be displayed.
• The Temperature Compensation function must be activated.
When all conditions are met, Altitude Corrections will be added to all
altitudes in the approach transition legs, approach legs, and the
missed approach legs.
Temperature Compensated Altitudes will be displayed on the FPL
page, the APPR PLAN page, the PATH VNAV page, the NAV APPR
page and the TEMP COMP page. After the temperature
compensation feature is activated, Temperature Compensated
Altitudes may be overwritten by entering a manual altitude on the
PATH VNAV page. The Temperature Compensation function may
be disabled by selecting the CANCEL option on the TEMP COMP
page. When Temperature Compensation is canceled, all altitudes,
including altitudes, which were manually entered after the
Temperature Compensation feature was activated, will have the
Altitude Corrections removed. TEMP COMP is also canceled if a
new airport and approach are entered in the flight plan.

To Activate Temperature Compensation:
1. Press the FPL key to access a flight plan page
2. Press the MENU key to access FPL MENU page 2/2:
3. Press TEMP COMP to display the TEMP COMP page(s):
Initially the TEMP COMP page will indicate 1/1 until such time that
all required data is entered and the feature activated.
4. Enter ARPT TEMP (in either C or F). The temperature must be
entered manually by the pilot, and can be in the range of 0° C to
-99° C and 32° F to -94° F
5. Enter ARPT ELEV. The ARPT ELEV will be prefilled with the
airport or runway elevation from the flight plan approach, but
may be manually overwritten.
6. Press the ACTIVATE line select key.
When activated, the subtitle will show TEMP COMP ON and line
select key [5L] will change to CANCEL. The number of available
TEMP COMP pages will increase to show all waypoints of the
approach, including transition and missed approach. Each waypoint
with an altitude defined will show charted altitude (MSL ALT), Height
Above Airport (HAA), Temperature Correction in feet (CORR) and
the resulting Temperature Compensated Altitude (COMP ALT). The
Compensated altitudes will be used in the VNAV calculations for
enroute VNAV and pseudo-glideslope.

A “calculator function” is available such that any altitude may be
entered on page 1 next to line select key [4L], and the resulting
temperature correction will be displayed.
If CANCEL is selected on the TEMP COMP page or if a new
airport/approach is entered in the flight plan, all corrections will be
deleted, and the charted altitudes from the data base will be used.

ILS and RNV Approaches with and without Advanced
EFIS Configuration
When Aircraft is Equipped with Collins Advanced EFIS (C-14, E-
4, etc.) and APS-85 Autopilot (or similar equipment from other
manufactures—see AFMS for the installation).
If an ILS, LOC or BC approach is in the flight plan, the FMS will tune
the VHF NAV to the ILS frequency, and blue second course
information will appear on the EFIS when ARM APPR is pressed.
When ACT APPR is selected, the FMS will enter FHDG mode and
the FMS will sequence to the INBOUND course to the first approach
waypoint. The pilot must use the heading knob or keyboard entry to
set up the correct intercept angle to final approach course. When
the aircraft is positioned correctly for localizer intercept (and the pilot
has selected INTERCEPT on the FMS and APPR on the FGS mode
panel), the EFIS/FGS will automatically transition to the ILS signals
and capture localizer and glideslope. After localizer capture, any
FMS Q factor warnings will be ignored by the FD/AP in order not to
