IMF INITIATIVES
Wanted: Applications for Master’s Programme
GLOBAL A one-year Master’s Programme
on Labour Policies and Globalisation is
being offered by Germany’s University
of Kassel and the Berlin School of Economics,
and is sponsored by, among others,
the International Labour Organisation
(ILO).
The programme aims to equip participants
to assist workers and their
organisations in engaging more effectively
in social dialogue, public debate
and policy implementation on central
human development objectives. These
include employment creation, gender
equality, workers’ rights and social
justice, all of which are key to combating
poverty and social exclusion.
The curriculum has been developed
by an international group of experts
from universities, the ILO, trade
unions (including the IMF) and their
research institutions. Main course
modules include:
• Trade union strategies in a global
economy;
• Strategies of multinational companies
and labour; and
• Organisational development of trade
unions.
The candidate profi le requires experience
in trade unions or related fi elds
and a Bachelor’s degree in political science,
sociology, law, economics or an
equivalent degree. Female candidates
are strongly encouraged to apply.
The closing date for applications is
March 15, 2005, and the current registration
fee is €350, plus costs for workshops
and excursions. A limited number
of scholarships are available for trade
unionists from developing countries.

PRAGUE CZECH REPUBLIC More than 30

Central and Eastern Europe regional
automotive conference on November
9-10. The meeting
brought
together representatives
from
the seven largest
motor vehicle
producing
countries in the region: Czech Republic,
Hungary, Poland, Russia, Slovakia,
Slovenia and the Ukraine.
Transnational automakers including
VW, GM, Renault, PSA and Toyota
have made substantial investments in
the region over the last decade and half,
and several new plants will start production
over the next couple of years.
Together with global automotive suppliers
that have established facilities,
large strategic clusters of manufacturing
operations have formed.
“Union building among metalworkers
in these clusters is a key challenge
that participants discussed. Important
tools include IMF international
