Making (Thomas Glavinich, University of
Kansas) – The purpose of this project is to
develop a method for estimating the cost of
capital for electrical contracting firms and to
demonstrate how the cost of capital can be
used to improve strategic and tactical
decision making.
From safety issues to productivity, do you know of
a research project that you believe will be an
asset to our industry? Call the Chapter office with
any ideas that you have so we can pass on this
valuable, much desired, and needed information
to the Foundation. With an original asset goal of
$7,000,000 that has long been surpassed to over
$22,000,000, our Foundation has the resources
and the desire to conduct research that will
benefit our members and the electrical
contracting industry.
The NECA West Board of Trustees recently
determined that the NECA West Health Plan is
able to provide its participating employers with a
one-time rate holiday for those who have
participated in the plan over the last 12
consecutive months. If you are a participant of
the NECA West Health Plan, you will receive a
rate holiday for the coverage month of March
2009. In the next week, you should receive your
February bill for March coverage, with a letter
from UAS notifying you of the rate holiday.
Please follow the instructions of the letter
carefully to ensure proper health care coverage
for you and your employees.

MONDAY MORNING
Dave Costa was born and raised in San
Francisco, where he graduated from
Woodrow Wilson High School. At the age of
22, Dave started his long time career in the
crane business working for Crane Hoist
Engineering as a service technician. In 1977,
he and two partners opened the doors to
Allied Crane in San Leandro, providing
maintenance services for overhead material
handling systems. In the early 90’s, the
company expanded its scope to include
manufacturing.
Another significant episode in Dave’s life
occurred in the early 90’s when he met the
love of his life, Connie. “She was my
preferred banking officer and as she moved
from branch to branch, I followed her.” Dave
and Connie have been married for 12 years.
Today, Allied Crane is a full service
manufacturer and distributor of overhead
traveling bridge cranes, monorails and jibs.
They offer as-built design and fabrication of
specialty crane systems, as well as service
and maintenance programs. Their services
are widely used throughout the United
States, Europe and Asia. Their 50,000
square foot facility is located in Pittsburgh on
4-1/2 acres. Allied Crane employs 23 field
and office personnel.
Among Allied Crane's long list of impressive
customers are USS Posco, United Airlines,
AKT, PG&E, Applied
Materials, Northrup
Grumman, where
they employ a full
time maintenance
person, and Man
Roland, a printing
press manufacturer.
“Our first
large job with Man
Roland was to
build a specialty
40-ton capacity
gantry crane, a floor track crane used to
install printing presses,” said Dave. First
installed in New York, the crane is now
widely used by Man Roland throughout the
United States.
Dave spoke of a crane exported to China
where it is used in the Flex Products mirror
plant in Beijing. “We built the crane and the
support structure,” Dave commented. Allied
Crane also exports to military bases around
the world.
Dave spoke highly of his employees. “Our
entire staff is great, and a group of dedicated
individuals. We have an excellent
management staff that makes running the
business easier for me. We literally have no
turnover to speak of.” Included on Allied
Crane’s staff is Dave’s son, Tim, who
manages the installation crew.
When asked what keeps Allied Crane going,
Dave responded, “We provide the best
product and excellent service at a fair price.
We have no sales staff. The work we have is
by reputation and we work hard at
maintaining that reputation.”
The future of Allied Crane is as promising as
their motto: “Quality and innovation without
compromise.”
