Dean Gauthier provided an insider’s view of ESupply
at Nortel Networks Optical Division. At the
outset he pronounced that e-Supply does not replace
supply agreements; it only facilitates their execution.
As Sam Walton is reported to have said, “Replace
inventory with information.” E-Supply is strictly a set
of tools and processes to enable exchange. The
operative word is collaboration whether in
forecasting, replenishment, capacity or execution. In
the Optical Division, 85% of business is transacted
through e-Supply and 92% of PO’s are placed
through e-Supply, 40% and 44% of Nortel’s business
respectively. This same division has realized a 57%
cycle time reduction in order replenishment and a
63% cycle time reduction in order confirmation.
Since the Nortel facility in St-Laurent has revenues
of $10 billion per annum, or $1.4 million per hour,
these reductions have translated into valuable savings
for the entire company.

KUDOS FOR DR. DEALY
Dr. John Dealy, former Dean of the
Faculty of Engineering and instrumental in
founding the MMM program, has been
named a Fellow of the Royal Society of
Canada, largely considered the country’s
premier accolade for scholars and scientists.
The induction ceremony will take place in
Ottawa on November 17. Dr. Dealy is a
recognized authority on the flow properties
of molten polymers, the elasticity of molten
plastics, their measurement and use in
polymer science and plastics engineering.
He is the author or co-author of three books
on flow properties and the inventor of
several instruments for measuring the
viscoelastic properties of melts.

MMM IN CHINA
Thanks to two students of the class of 1999-
2000, the MMM program has been further
popularized in China. Professors Vince
Thomson and Vedat Verter, program codirectors,
have been communicating with
Qian Jin College and New Oriental School
which prepare students by the thousands for
the GRE, GMAT and TOEFL tests. In
response to their invitation, Roger Huang
made a 45-minute presentation to 500
students at Qian Jin College in Shanghai,
with the assistance of the CEO, Mr. Cai, and
the Vice-President, Mr. Shao. Similarly in
Beijing, Shuqun Ma made presentations in
five classrooms of 1000 students each at the
New Oriental School. This was
accomplished with the collaboration of Mr.
Bob Xu who promised further cooperation
in the months ahead. Roger and Shuqun will
be doing periodic follow-up because both
feel that this is the best avenue to attract
qualified candidates to the MMM program.

Dear Fellow Pilots:
I hope that you have enjoyed the past six issues of the Runway Risks newsletter, which has
been our pleasure to bring to you. When we conceived this publication in early 2008, we
envisioned a six-issue project, concentrating on runway incursions to support the FAA’s “Call
to Action” of last year.
The feedback that we have received suggested that our runway incursion information was
helpful, so now we want to turn our attention to another serious runway safety issue: excursions.
In fact, excursions historically account for substantially more damage and loss of life
than do incursions. Consequently, we concluded that we could not ignore this very significant
topic. Therefore, upon the recommendation of Captain Bob Perkins (ACJ), chairman
of the Airport Ground Environment Group, we intend to publish four additional issues of the
newsletter—including this one—concentrating on runway excursion risks.
This issue focuses on the importance of stabilized approaches. We all know that it is preferable
