How did
you feel when you achieved success? What enabled the success to
occur?
After the team begins to ‘gel’, identifying the team’s task by
the members can begin. Successful team building has two keys to
success:
• Establish relationships
• Trust is the keystone (it reduces the storming to norming
evolution that all teams experience)
Employee Involvement: When the team’s opinions truly matter in
a meaningful way that relates to the future – a genuine passion can
emerge. Passion that ends in success, in turn, improves morale.
Responsibility, Accountability and Authority (RAA): The responsibilities
(expectations) of the team must be clearly defined so the
team knows when they are done. The team must also let each
member be responsible for some of the team’s activity.
Some action must be taken for the team to become cohesive
toward a common goal. These actions include:
• Identify the expectation (team’s task) in measurable terms
• Give each person the responsibility to identify the issue
and the authority to create the fix
• Management must relinquish tight control
• The team must be available and respond to customer
(internal and/or external) inquiries and concerns
• Reward/Recognize teams (not individuals) for success
Individuals and Organizations taking the first step
• “If we don’t change – why would you expect a different
outcome?”
• “To stagnate in a global economy is certain death, given
time.”
Partnership Update – December 12, 2002
Dear SPEEA Executive Board, Membership and Staff,
On behalf of United Way of Snohomish County and
Operation Short Fall, I want to thank all of you for
your wonderfully generous $1,000 contribution. This
significant amount will strengthn our efforts to help keep our
local “Safety Net” intact for many, many families and individuals.
Combined with the dollar-for-dollar Boeing Corporate Challenge
Grant, the impact of this gift is now even more powerful.
As you know, Operation Short Fall is a 501(3)c non-profit
organization completely managed by local union volunteers to
erase hunger in Snohomish County and provide emergency assistance
to families and individuals in crisis. In partnership with
Volunteers of America and the other 19 members of the Food
Bank Coalition, over $115,000.00 has been distributed to help
families and individuals in need of food and emergency assistance
year round.
We would like to particularly thank Chris Glenn, Bob Rommel
and Mark Moshay for their passionate advocacy for the mission of
Operation Short Fall within SPEEA and in the community!
We are deeply honored to be one of the many fortunate organizations
receiving financial support from the SPEEA membership.

Case History
SPEEA – Making a Difference!
A sk member Kevin Cooper and his wife Michele if being a
Union member is worthwhile.
Michele is bedridden and suffers from muscular dystrophy.
For six months, the company that provides the therapeutic
bed and mattress for Michele threatened to take the bed from the
Cooper’s home if the $14,000 plus bill was not paid. The provider
had denied payment on the mattress for over one year. SPEEA got
involved. On a week-to-week basis for a month, SPEEA successfully
convinced the rental Company to hold off repossession until
the issue could be resolved.
The medical provider finally reviewed the account and found that
the bed was covered under the medical plan. The problem turned
out to be that the medical equipment rental company was billing
the insurance provider under an incorrect billing number. The
billing number was changed and the bed was paid for. [LA]

The Executive Board:
• Reviewed a Five-Year plan and assigned action items
to update the plan prior to the January 2003 Council
meeting.
• Authorized support of a Focus Group initiative which
has the goal of researching and listening to what people
think about transportation issues in the Puget Sound
region.
