on the company.
In mid-September over 20,000 trade
unionists, asbestos victims and community
leaders marched in cities around
Australia calling on the company to face
up to its asbestos liabilities. At the same
time, trade unions in the US protested
at the company’s American office in
Mission Viejo, Orange County, California.
Protest action also took place at the
company’s annual general meeting held
in the Netherlands, the country where
James Hardie is now legally based.
Thanking others for their support so
far, Australian Council of Trade Unions
president Sharan Burrow said, “protest
actions internationally were critical
in our campaign here in Australia,
raising awareness and the stakes for
James Hardie to agree to the negotiations
now in process.”

IMF INITIATIVES
GENEVA SWITZERLAND The IMF Women’s
Committee met in Geneva in November
to discuss progress with the
implementation of the IMF Executive
decisions on women. Plans for the
forthcoming IMF Women’s Conference,
to be held in conjunction with the
IMF Congress in Vienna in May 2005,
were also discussed.
The committee reviewed participation
by women at the last meeting of
the Central Committee in Cape Town
in December 2003. Women made up 18
per cent of those attending the Central
Committee. While the 20 per cent
target set by the Executive was not
achieved, participation by women was
double that of the nine per cent women
that attended the Central Committee
meeting held in Birmingham in 2000.
The committee undertook to urge their
own unions to maximise the number of
women in their delegations to the Congress,
for which the Executive has also
set a target of 20 per cent participation
by women.
Some improvement was noted in the
attendance of women at sub-regional
meetings, notably Southern Africa
and Latin America, however attendance
by women at meetings in the
Asian region is still disappointingly
low. There has been little change to the
exceptionally low rate of participation
by women in IMF industrial meetings
and this was identified as a priority to
be addressed by the Women’s Committee
in 2005.
Participants made reports on women’s
activities in each of the six regions.
Almost all reports stressed the importance
of the proposed women Executive
Committee members having
strong support within their regions
and participating in regional women’s
meetings.
IMF Women’s committee meets
Following a
discussion about
the theme for the
Women’s Conference
to be held in
Vienna, the Committee
determined
that it
should be on
aspects of the
impact of globalisation
on women.
The Conference
should also provide
an opportunity
for women
delegates to be
briefed on what
they can expect
at the IMF Congress
and how
they can maximise
their participation
as well as
to discuss resolutions to be put forward
to the Congress from the Women’s Conference.
North American regional meeting
The first-ever IMF regional women’s
meeting for North America took place
in September. Representatives from
six IMF affiliates in the United States
and Canada came together in Pittsburgh,
USA.
The primary objectives of the meeting
were to explore potential areas of
cooperation between the unions both
in terms of their own activities and
in relation to IMF. All unions present
reported on their own women’s programs.
A recurring feature of the
programs was an emphasis on political
work and encouraging women to
become active on the issues and in
their own communities. JH
