2009 PROJECT EXCELLENCE AWARDS
The Northern California Chapter, NECA Membership Committee is
proud to announce its fourth Annual Project Excellence Awards
competition. This program was developed to recognize excellence in
electrical/technology installations and the NECA contractors
responsible for their outstanding achievements. Projects may be
submitted in the following categories:
For each type of project listed, there will be two awards categories based on whether the
electrical/technology project is valued at under or over $1,000,000.
If you would like to enter a project in this year’s competition, please submit your entry
form with project photo to the Chapter office no later than June 1, 2009.

MONDAY MORNING
IN MEMORY OF GARY CANEPA
On January 17, 2009, Gary
Canepa, our friend, colleague
and lover of life, passed away
at the young age of 55. Gary
began his career in the
electrical industry five years
after graduating from high
school when he joined IBEW
Local 302. He devoted many
years of his life to the union,
and especially loved cooking
at the picnics. Gary was a lover of good gourmet
food, and enjoyed preparing it and finding
restaurants which met his high standards. After
his stent with Local 302, Gary moved into the
position of Director of Mission 2000 (now
NCECI). He was a highly respected member of
the Mission 2000 team, by not only his staff but
IBEW staff, NECA Chapters and industry
leaders alike. He was regarded as a visionary
leader by everyone who had the pleasure of
working with him. Gary’s entrepreneurial spirit
and contributions during his eight years of
dedicated and selfless service were many and
varied. He was a major part of the Mission 2000
initial expansion across the Contra Costa County
line. Many of his ideas and concepts are still
being carried on today.
Gary is survived by his wife Linda, children
Desiree, Travis, Roman, Tammy and Jeanette,
seven grandchildren, his brother Frank, and
numerous friends. Services for Gary were held
on Friday, January 23, 2009, at St. Catherine of
Siena Church in Martinez.
All who knew Gary, loved him. He will be sorely
missed by all whose lives he touched.
USGBC is actively monitoring and informing
deliberations about the economic recovery package
urged by President Obama and now under
development in Congress. Even with passage in the
House yesterday, the specifics of the plan are not yet
final—and are currently the subject of debate and
negotiation in both the House and Senate.
Nevertheless, the following elements of the
packages proposed by both chambers hold
particular promise for green building and represent
an important recognition of the transformative
potential of existing buildings:
