 F. Install the Aileron Control Wheel (Fig. 401)

 (1)  
Install the aileron control wheel.

 (a)  
Use a wire leader to install the electrical wires in the control wheel.

 (b)  
Connect the correct color wires to the stabilizer trim (30), autopilot disengage (27), microphone (23), and radio transmit switches (Fig. 402).

 NOTE:  Before the connection, the wires must be away from the
____ switch holes and have teflon sleeves installed.
 (c)  
Put the microphone switch and the trigger assembly (24) in the control wheel (1).

 (d)  
Install the screws (29).

 (e)  
Put the stabilizer trim switch (30) in the control wheel (1).

 (f)  
Install the insulator (31) and screws (32).

 (g)  
Put the autopilot disengage switch (27) in the control wheel (1).

 (h)  
Install the plate (26) and screw (28).

 (i)  
Apply the Dow Corning Compound No. 5 to the part that you can get access to on the wire bundle.

 (j)  
Set a clamp at the reference mark.

 CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU KEEP THE WIRE BUNDLE BETWEEN THE COLUMN
_______ AND THE WHEEL AT THE SPECIFIED LENGTH. THE CONTROL WHEEL WILL NOT MOVE FREELY IF THE WIRE BUNDLE LENGTH IS NOT CORRECT.
 (k)  Attach the wire bundle in the control wheel hub with a clamp.
 NOTE: Approximately 27 inches of free wire (measured from the
____ clamp in the wheel to the hole in the housing) is necessary before you tighten the lower clamps. Make sure that the control wheel can turn an equal arc in each direction from the neutral position.
 (l)  
Apply Dow Corning Compound No. 5 to the control wheel splines.

 (m)  
Wind the wire bundle four times around the control wheel hub.

 NOTE: If you look forward (into the upper cavity), wind the
____ bundle counterclockwise for the captain's wheel. For the first officer's wheel, wind the bundle clockwise.
 (n)  
Engage the splines on the control wheel to the control column at the identified positions.

 (o)  
Install the special washer (7).

 (p)  
Tighten the wheel retaining nut (8) 85-140 pound-inches.

 (q)  
Install the cotter pin (9).

 (2)  
Do a check on the operation of the control wheel.

 (a)  
Put the captain's and first officer's aileron control wheels in the neutral position.

 (b)  Put the straightedge across the four thumbrests (Fig. 403).
 NOTE:____ The thumbrest projection cannot be farther than 0.05 inch from the straightedge.
 (c) (d) (e)  Install the control wheel adapter and protractor.Remove rig pin A/S-1 from the aileron control load limiter.Make sure the captain's control wheel turns 89 to 91 degrees in each direction from neutral.
 (f) (g) (h) (i)  Make sure the first officer's control wheel turns 99 to 101 degrees in each direction from neutral.Operate the control wheel through five cycles of full travel.Make sure the control wheel moves smoothly and freely.Remove the control wheel protractor.

 (3)  Make sure the control wheel end play is not more than 0.010 inch from a 2 +/- 1/4 pounds load applied paralled to the axis of rotation.
