Prepare for the Procedure
S 224-020
(1)
Examine the fit of the side strut bolt where the side strut attaches to the spindle (AMM 32-11-05/601).
S 644-021
(2)
Prepare the lubrication insert for installation into the side strut bolt.
(a)
Examine the O-rings for deterioration or damage. 1) If it is necessary, replace the O-rings.
(b)
Apply a large quantity of grease to the O-rings and the lubrication insert.
(c)
Apply a large quantity of grease to the inner surface of the side strut bolt.
(d)
Put the O-rings on the lubrication insert.
(e)
If it is necessary, lubricate the lubrication insert again.

(3)
Install the lubrication insert into the side strut bolt.
(a)
Align the lockbolt holes in the lubrication insert with the holes in the side strut bolt.

Procedure

(1)
Apply a thin layer of grease to the surfaces of the spindle, the spline washer, and the spindle nut.

(2)
Install the spindle in the support structure with the thread protector.
(3)
Remove the thread protector.

(4) Install the spline washer with the spindle nut.
(a) Tighten the nut with your hands.

(5) Apply a layer of grease to the threads of the side strut bolt.

(6) Apply a layer of grease to the surfaces of the tang washer.

(7) Connect the spindle to the top end of the upper side strut.
(a) Align the upper side strut with the spindle.
(b) Put the swivel bracket in the correct position for installation
of the side strut bolt.
(c) Install the side strut bolt with the lubrication insert.
(d) Install the tang washer.
(e) Install the special nut.
1) Tighten the nut 480 to 600 pound-inches.
2) Loosen the nut to align the nearest castellation of the nut
