Introduction
The non-normal checklists chapter contains checklists used by the flight crew to
cope with non–normal situations. The checklists are grouped in sections which
match the system description chapters in Volume 2.
Most checklists correspond to an EICAS alert message. The EICAS alert message
indicates a failure condition and is the cue to select and do the associated checklist.
Some checklists correspond to an EICAS advisory message. The EICAS advisory
message indicates an unusual condition and may be for information only, may be
for ground use to prevent dispatch, or may be the cue to select and do the
associated checklist.
Checklists without an EICAS message (such as Ditching) are called
unannunciated checklists. Most unannunciated checklists are in the associated
system section. For example, Fuel Leak is in the Fuel section, section 12.
Unannunciated checklists with no associated system are in the Miscellaneous
section, section 0.
A rectangle symbol [ ] precedes all EICAS messages that have procedural steps,
notes, or other information of which the flight crew should be aware. The symbol
is removed from the EICAS message when the checklist has been completed. In
the printed non–normal checklists, the titles also have the symbol to agree with the
EICAS message. EICAS messages without symbols have obvious checklists
(such as OVERSPEED).
A condition statement is given for all checklists. The condition statement briefly
describes the situation that caused the EICAS message to show. Unannunciated
checklists also have condition statements to help in understanding the reason for
the checklist.
Checklists can have both memory and reference items. Memory items are critical
steps that must be done before reading the checklist. In the printed non-normal
checklists, memory items are followed by a dashed horizontal line. In the
electronic checklists, memory items are not identified. Reference items are actions
to be done while reading the checklist.
In each system section, Quick Action Index checklists are listed first. Checklists
not on the Quick Action Index are listed after the Quick Action Index checklists.
Checklist titles in upper case (such as AUTOBRAKE) exactly match the EICAS
message title. Checklist titles in upper and lower case (such as Window Damage
L, R or Automatic Unlock) do not have an EICAS message or do not exactly
match the EICAS message title. The titles of Quick Action Index checklists are
printed in bold type.

Electronic Checklist Operation
A non–normal menu is given for the electronic checklist.
The primary purposes of the non–normal menu are to access unannunciated
checklists and to access the condition statements for EICAS messages without [ ]
symbols.
The non-normal menu is also used to access checklists for EICAS messages with
[ ] symbols to allow review of the checklist. Operation of the electronic checklist
is described in section 10; Flight Instruments, Displays.
Non–Normal Checklist Operation
Non–normal checklists start with steps to correct the situation. If needed,
information for planning the rest of the flight is included. When special items are
needed to configure the airplane for landing, the items are deferred to the
DESCENT, APPROACH or LANDING checklist. The electronic checklist
automatically adds deferred items to the checklists. Flight patterns for some
non–normal situations are located in the Maneuvers chapter and show the
sequence of configuration changes.
In some cases the crew may need to move between two checklists. For example,
for unannunciated smoke, fire or fumes the crew starts with the SMOKE, FIRE
OR FUMES checklist. The crew must quickly do the initial steps that provide for
crew safety and isolate potential sources of the problem. The procedure then
