reactive current (electrical current). Current flowing in an alternating current circuit that is not in phase
with the voltage.
reactive metal. A metal that reacts readily with oxygen to form an oxide. Aluminum and magnesium are
both reactive metals.
reactive power (electrical power). Wattless power in an alternating current circuit. Reactive power, the
power consumed in the inductive and capacitive reactances in the circuit, is expressed in volt-amps reactive
(VAR) or in kilovolt-amps reactive (KVAR).

reactor(electrical circuit). A small coil installed in an alternating current circuit to furnish inductive
reactance to cancel some of the capacitive reactance in the circuit. Reactors normally have very little
resistance.
“Read back” (air traffic control). A phrase used by ATC to mean “repeat my message back to me.”
reader (microfiche system). An optical instrument used to read the information recorded on a microfiche.
The microfiche is placed on the reader and moved around to position the correct image in front of the lens.
The magnified image is projected onto a screen so the operator can read it. Some microfiche readers have a
built-in printer that makes a hard copy of the projected image. This type of reader is called a reader-printer.
real number. Numbers that include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero.
real power (electrical power). The power in an alternating current circuit that actually produces work.
Real power (true power) is measured in watts and is the product of the circuit voltage and only the current
in phase with this voltage.
Real power can be found by multiplying the apparent power, the product of the total voltage and
the total current, by the power factor, the percent of the total current in phase with the circuit voltage.
ream (metalworking process). To enlarge a hole and smooth its sides. If a hole in a piece of metal is to be
fitted with a close-tolerance part, it is usually drilled slightly undersize and cut to the correct diameter with
a reamer.
reamed fit. The fit of a shaft in a hole in which the hole is drilled undersize and cut with a reamer to the
correct diameter. Reamed holes have smooth walls and a consistent diameter.
reamer (metal-cutting tool). A cutting tool used to produce a smooth surface on the inside of a drilled
hole. A reamer has several sharp cutting edges that cut away the rough surface left by the drill.
rebreather oxygen mask. A type of mask used with a continuous-flow oxygen system. Oxygen
continuously flows into the bottom of the loose-fitting rebreather bag on the mask, and the wearer of the
mask exhales into the top of the bag. The first air exhaled contains some oxygen, and this air goes into the
bag first. The last air to leave the lungs contains little oxygen, and it is forced out as the bag is filled with
fresh oxygen. Each time the wearer of the mask inhales, the air first exhaled, along with fresh oxygen, is
taken back into the lungs, or rebreathed.
rebuilt engine. A used engine that has been completely disassembled, inspected, repaired as necessary,
reassembled, tested, and approved in the same manner and to the same tolerances and limits as a new
engine, using either new or used parts. The parts used in a rebuilt engine must conform to all production
drawings, tolerances, and limits for new parts or be of approved oversize or undersize dimensions allowed
for a new engine.
According to 14 CFR 91.421, a rebuilt engine is considered to have no previous operating history
and may be issued a zero-time logbook. Only the engine manufacturer or an agent approved by the
manufacturer can rebuild an engine and issue a zero-time record.
receiver-dryer (vapor-cycle cooling system component).The component in the high side of a vapor-cycle
cooling system that serves as a reservoir for the liquid refrigerant. The receiver-dryer contains a desiccant
that absorbs any moisture that may be in the refrigerant.
reciprocal. Opposite. If the heading of an aircraft is 270°, its reciprocal heading is 090° (the heading in the
opposite direction).
The reciprocal of a number is the number one, divided by the number. The reciprocal of two is
one-half, one divided by two (1 ÷ 2 or 1/2).
reciprocating engine. A type of heat engine that changes chemical energy in fuel and air into mechanical
energy. A mixture of fuel and air is drawn into a cylinder as a close-fitting piston moves downward.
The valve through which the fuel-air mixture entered the cylinder closes, and the piston moves up,
compressing the mixture. As the piston nears the top of its stroke, the compressed mixture is ignited, and it
