 (1)  
Install the lever brake (Fig. 401):

 (a)  
Adjust the backlash in the lever brake: 1) Measure the primary backlash in the lever brake. 2) If the primary backlash is not in the limit of 0.020 to

 0.023 inch, adjust the backlash: a) Measure the total secondary backlash clearance on the brake shoe assembly.
 b)  Install two shims in the clearance for the secondary backlash to make sure the drive arm and brake shoe are in the center.
 NOTE: Do not adjust the setscrews for the secondary
____ backlash. The thickness of each of the two shims must be 1/2 of the total secondary backlash clearance.

 c)  Adjust the setscrews for the primary backlash until the total clearance is 0.020 to 0.023 inch divided equally between the two brake shoe assemblies.
 NOTE: Make sure you do not compress the springs and
____ the brake shoes when you measure the clearance.
 d)  Remove the two shims from the brake shoe assembly.
 (b)  
Apply a thin layer of the petrolatum to the inner and outer parts of the friction quadrant.

 (c)  
Install the lever brake assembly: 1) Put the bearings and bearing retainers on the ends of the shaft. 2) Put the lever brake assembly and the shaft in their position in the airplane. 3) Apply a layer of the primer to the bolts for the bearing

 retainers. 4) Install the eleven bolts in the two bearing retainers. 5) Install the washers and nuts on the bolts. 6) Install the locknut to attach the lever brake input arm to
 the shaft.
 (d)  Attach the lower control rod to the input arm for the lever brake: 1) Install the bolt with the head inboard. 2) Install the washer and nut on the bolt.

Install the forward drum:

 (a)  
Install the washer on the shaft.

 (b)  
Install the forward drum quadrant on the shaft.

 NOTE: The shaft and the quadrant have a tooth that is not
____ there to make sure the quadrant is in the correct position.
 (c)  
Install the washer and the quadrant retaining bolt.

 (d)  
Tighten the quadrant retaining bolt to 40-50 pound-inches.
