 (1)  Use an optical micrometer to measure the depth of scratches or crazing. Obey the minimum window thickness limits in the inspection/check procedure (Ref 56-11-21) after the repair.
 NOTE: If the depth of the scratch or the crazing is more than
____ 0.050 inch, you cannot repair the window.

Apply masking tape to the window frame and the seal.

Flush loose dirt from the window.

Remove small clamshell surface chips, scratches, and surface crazing with abrasive paper or cloth. Use a coarse abrasive paper for gauges, deep scratches, and bad crazing (usually not more than 100 grit).

 NOTE: If a small repair is necessary, use a fine abrasive paper to
____ reduce the time to polish the window. Do not try to repair only a local part of the surface area. This will cause visual distortion.

Rub all the window surface in the horizontal direction. Use a sander that operates at approximately 800 cycles per minute.

 NOTE: If you rub with an abrasive paper for 2 to 5 minutes, you
____ will remove approximately 0.005 inches of acrylic. Change the abrasive paper frequently.

Do the procedure again until all the surface damage is removed and the surface has a constant thickness.

Rub the window with an abrasive paper for 2 minutes to make sure all the cracks and crazes are removed.

 Polish the window with graduations of abrasive materials (coarse to fine). Use 100-600 grit paper and micromesh cloths of 1600-1800 grit.

 Continue each step until the polish masks are removed (normally 2-3 minutes in each step).

 Move the sander horizontally to polish the window surface.

 Move the sander vertically across the window surface.

 Polish the window with buffing compound and a clean muslin or wool pad. If necessary, use coarse and fine compounds to get a glossy finish. If a rotary buffer is used, the wheel surface speed must be 3200 feet per minute for coarse compound and 4200 feet per minute for fine compound.
