In Figure 2 the aeronautic maintenance context is depicted, as it has been defined from
the analysis of typical work scenarios.

5. Development of the first demonstrator
For the first showcase the inspection scenario has been selected as the basis for an indepth
analysis and as a reference for designing and implementing the first prototype of the
wearable maintenance application. Maintenance operators have to perform daily
inspections and this means that it is relatively easy and fast to set up the scenario
configuration for testing the prototype. Therefore, maintenance operators and their
organizations can easily evaluate the efficiency of the system and provide a feedback that
can be use for designing the next generation of wearable/mobile maintenance support tools.
The main aspects that are expected to be improved by the introduction of the wearable
maintenance support integrated application are:
• Mobility of maintenance operators. Nowadays the operators are normally overloaded
with all the information support (usually in paper form) and with all the tools and
materials needed for their work
• Communication with experts and other team members;
• Reporting system
• Advanced field training and life-long learning in such a rapidly evolving and complex
environment
Moreover, the development and assessment of the first prototype for the inspection
scenario is intended also as a good basis to inform the research agenda of the project with
respect to future direction to be followed in order to challenge the capabilities of the
wearable computing technologies. Some preliminary considerations on this are:
• Frequency of occurrence: inspection in a maintenance centre is a daily operation. This
task can be either easy and fast or more complex when involving also troubleshooting
and repair tasks.
• Pedagogical and organizational value: introducing new technology and a new way to
work on a usual maintenance task is a good entry point to facilitate the smooth
adoption of the proposed solution by end users and stakeholders.

• Wearable computing platform: from a technical point of view the integrated solution
is expected to improve the mobility of workers while offering the possibility to access
technical databases, to file and send reports, to communicate with team members
through a non-obtrusive device.
• Access to task-relevant information: research on information management and design
of multimedia contents is needed in order to adapt content to devices, to facilitate the
user interaction, to find new metaphors for information presentation.
• Efficiency: the efficiency of this first prototype will be evaluated on time saving,
availability of documentation, user acceptance (interface/devices), exchanged
documents.
The first demonstrator has been actually designed and developed in order to suitably
support the process and workflow represented in Figure 3.

Main features offered by the maintenance application, which was assembled starting
from existing COTS (Components Off-The-Shelf) at this stage, can be summarized as
follows:
• Advanced XML-based content management functionalities
• Automatic tracking of user’s actions, compliant with worldwide accepted
specification SCORM 1.2 (Sharable Content Object Reference Model)
• Multi-device wearable delivery and rendering of information
• Integration with a speech-based interaction engine
• Innovative concepts and metaphors for information presentation and navigation
