Prepare for the Installation

WARNING:_______MAKE SURE THAT THE ELEVATORS ARE BALANCED AT ALL TIMES. IF THE ELEVATORS ARE NOT BALANCED THEY CAN CAUSE THE UNWANTED FLUTTER AND THE INSTABILITY OF THE AIRPLANE. THIS CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS DURING THE FLIGHT.
(1)
Make sure the outboard elevators are balanced at all times
(SRM 51-60-00).

(2)
Do a check of the structural attach points for worn parts: AMM 27-31-03/601, elevator hinges 5 thru 10 and reaction hinge and AMM 27-31-08/601, actuator ram attachment to elevator.
(a)
Replace the part if it is worn.

Apply a layer of grease on the elevator hinge bushings (7) and (34), and the bolt assemblies (24) and (35).

Examine the condition of seals at stabilizer trailing edge and at the outboard elevator between the inboard and outboard elevators.
(a)
Replace the seal if it is a damaged part.

H. Install the Outboard Elevator
S 424-021
(1) Install the outboard elevator.
NOTE: The outboard elevator nonreaction hinges must be installed in
____
the sequence of 6, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
(a)
Use the elevator sling to hold the elevator at the stabilizer trailing edge.
(b)
Install the bolt assembly (24) in the reaction hinge.
(c)
Install the nuts (22) and (21) and the washer (23). 1) Use the spanner wrench to tighten the outer nut (22) to 1000-1100 pound-inches plus run-on torque.
2) Use the spanner wrench to tighten the inner nut (21) to 300-500 pound-inches plus run-on torque.
(d)
Install the bushings (7), bolts (5), washers (9), and nut (10) on the elevator hinge assemblies.
(e)
Make sure you install the lockwasher (6).
(f)
If it is necessary, install the large washers (3) to keep a clearance of 0.01-0.06 inch.
(g)
Tighten the nut (10) to 95-110 pound-inches plus run-on torque.
(h)
Install the bushing (34).
(i)
Install the bolt assembly (35) with the bolt head outboard in the actuator ram.
(j)
Install the nuts (31) and (33) and the washer (32) on the bolt assembly. 1) Use the spanner wrench to tighten the outer nut (33) to
1000-1100 pound-inches plus run-on torque. 2) Use the spanner wrench to tighten the inner nut (31) to 800-900 pound-inches plus run-on torque.

Clean the faying surfaces.

Install the screw (15), washers (13), (14), and (16), and nut (12) to connect the bonding jumper (4) to the elevator hinges.
(a)
Tighten the nut (12).

Install the screw (26), washers (27), (28), and (29), and nut (30) to connect the bonding jumper (25) to the reaction hinge.

Tighten the nut (30).

(5)
Use the bonding meter to measure the resistance of the bonding jumper connection.
(a)
Make sure that the resistance of the bonding jumper connection is not more than 0.010 ohm.
