6-7 RNP REQUIREMENTS
a. REQUIRED NAVIGATION PERFORMANCE (RNP)

Area navigation. Navigation defined by geographic points, rather than ground based navigation aids, will form the basis for the future Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) operating environment. This concept is known as Area Navigation (RNAV). One missing element from the RNAV concept is the level of confidence in navigation accuracy, which RNP provides. RNP RNAV is the combined concept of RNP and RNAV.

RNP Concept. The RNP concept is defined as a statement of the navigation performance accuracy necessary for operation within a defined airspace. Note: additional requirements beyond accuracy, apply to each RNP type.

Application of RNP. The term RNP helps describe airspace, routes, and procedures (including departures, arrivals and instrument approach procedures). The term is flexible and can apply to unique approach procedures or large regions of airspace (e.g., BRNAV/RNP-5). The term also denotes a complete and unambiguous set of navigation performance requirements for the aircraft. The term RNP-(x) RNAV (or RNP RNAV type) is used to differentiate between the different RNP RNAV types. An aircraft complying with the navigation performance of a particular RNP type will comply with the corresponding requirements to a particular type of flight phase or operation.

RNP RNAV Types. The table below lists the RNP types applicable for all DoD aircraft. Publication of this table is intended to provide crews with general information to evaluate equipment requirements relating to various RNP airspace classes.
The applicable range provides guidance for determining the operational capability of the aircraft. For example, if the desired route of flight includes RNP-6 airspace, an aircraft must comply with RNP-5 accuracy, integrity, and continuity. Conversely, if the aircraft is equipped to meet RNP-5 accuracy then it may operate in any applicable range requiring RNP-5 or higher criteria.

RNP Assumptions. The objective of the concept of RNP RNAV is to define all applicable navigation performance requirements, including both the airborne and external navigation elements.
(6) RNP System Performance Requirements.
(a)
Accuracy. Aircraft operating in RNP airspace shall remain within the RNP value (X) nautical miles of its course centerline for 95% of the flight (e.g., RNP-4 equals within 4 NM).
(b)
Integrity (containment). The track containment limit is twice the RNP RNAV value (e.g., 8 NM for RNP-4). The concept of a containment region forms the foundation for the containment integrity requirements. It provides the crew an indication of the maximum limit of "protected" airspace for a given route segment.
(c)
Continuity (containment). This requirement defines the equipment that must be available at dispatch or upon initiating an RNP RNAV operation. Containment continuity requirements are based on the concept of a defined containment
region.
