 (a) (b) (c)  Apply a thin layer of grease to the carriage adjacent to the thrust bearing, retainer nut, link and the nut.Apply a thin layer of grease to the inner diameter of the thrust bearing and the link bearing.If you removed the spacer ring, install the spacer ring with the sealant.
 NOTE:____ The chamfer on the spacer ring must point forward to go through the radius on the stops on the carriage.
 (d) (e)  Put the carriage on the midflap and put the aft end of the carriage through the thrust bearing.Apply grease to the threads of the retainer nut and the retainer collar.
 (f) (g) (h) (i)  Move the retainer collar and the retainer nut on the carriage.Put the aft end of the carriage through the link.Put the retainer collar on the lugs on the carriage.Put a screwdriver blade between the end of the lug on the carriage spindle and the end of the retainer collar antirotation lug (Detail C, Fig. 401).
 NOTE:____ The screwdriver will not permit the retainer collar to turn when the retainer nut is tightened.
 (j)  Remove the screwdriver before you tighten the nut sufficiently to hold the screwdriver.
 (k) (l)  Install the retainer nut.Use a main carriage retainer nut wrench to tighten the retainer nut to 3600 pound-inches (407 N-m). After the nut is at torque, loosen the nut. Tighten and loosen the nut again. Tighten the nut to the required torque value. If the retainer nut is not aligned with a slot in the collar, continue to tighten the nut until the lockbolt hole in the retainer nut is aligned with a slot in the collar.
 (m) (n)  NOTE: It is necessary to tighten the retainer nut three____ times to 3600 pound-inches (407 N-m) so the nut will seat correctly on the carriage.Remove the bolts which attach the retainer to the locknut.Install the locknut and retainer.
 NOTE:____ It can be necessary to adjust the retainer nut to align the holes in the locknut.
 (o) (p) (q)  Install the bolts into the locknut and the retainer nut.Install the lockwire on the bolts.Install the washers and nut on the aft end of the carriage.

 (r)  Tighten the nut to 900-1400 pound-inches (102-158 N-m). Install the cotter pin.
 NOTE: Install a maximum of three washers to permit the cotter

 pin to engage the nut.

 (s)  If the carriage thread end has been modified with a bolt, tighten the nut to 700-1000 pound-inches (79-113 N-m) (View B-B, Fig. 401). Install the cotter pin.

Install the failsafe link on the fitting on the carriage:

 (a)  
Install the bolt into the failsafe link with the bolt head forward.

 (b)  
Install the washer and the nut on the bolt.

 (c)  
Tighten the nut to 230-250 pound-inches (26-28 N-m).

 (d)  
Loosen the nut one quarter turn.

 OUTBOARD FLAP CARRIAGE - INSPECTION/CHECK

 1.  General_______
 A.  There is one task in this procedure; an inspection of the outboard flap carriage. In the first part you measure the bearings and the carriage. You measure the inner diameters of the two bearings and the outer diameters of the carriage sleeve and the carriage fitting. This check is usually done before you install a carriage.
