(6) S 424-025Immediately install the axle sleeve before the temperatures of the sleeve and the axle go to the ambient temperature.
CAUTION:_______ DO NOT HIT THE SLEEVE DIRECTLY WITH THE HAMMER. CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE AXLE SLEEVE. THIS WILL
(a) (b) (c) (d) If it is necessary, carefully use a hammer with a block of wood to move the sleeve.Make sure the retention pin hole in the sleeve aligns with the hole in the axle.Make sure a minimum clearance of 0.120 inch is between the flat edges of the saw gaps (Fig. 401).If the axle sleeve goes too far on the axle, use the axle sleeve puller to put the sleeve in its correct position.
NOTE:____ The electrical heat blanket and the dry ice will help with the movement of the sleeve.
(7) S 434-026Install the retention pin for the axle sleeve: (a) Apply the BMS 10-11 primer to the area in the retention pin hole of the axle. (b) Install the retention pin while the primer is wet. 1) Lightly push the retention pin into the axle. 2) Make sure the retention pin fully engages with the axle.
(8) S 644-027Fill the bushing flange slot at the truck beam with grease (Fig. 401).
(9) S 884-028Apply thermal loads to the axle and the brake housing bushing.

WARNING:_______DO NOT GET THE DRY ICE ON YOUR SKIN. THE DRY ICE IS FROZEN CARBON DIOXIDE AT A TEMPERATURE OF APPROXIMATELY -120°F. THE COLD TEMPERATURE OF THE CARBON DIOXIDE CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
(a) Decrease the temperature of the axle with the dry ice.
1) Apply the dry ice to the inner diameter and the outer diameter of the axle.
NOTE: When the steam from the dry ice almost stops, the
____ axle temperature will be near the temperature of the dry ice (-120°F). This is the recommended condition.
2) Add more dry ice to the inner diameter of the axle to keep the axle at a constant temperature.
(b) Put the electrical heat blanket around the brake housing bushing.
CAUTION: DO NOT PERMIT THE TEMPERATURE OF THE AXLE COMPONENTS TO
_______ BECOME 300°F FOR MORE THAN 180 MINUTES. THE MATERIALS FOR THE AXLE COMPONENTS CAN BECOME WEAK IF THE THERMAL LOADS ARE TOO LARGE. WEAK AXLE COMPONENTS CAN HAVE A FAILURE DURING OPERATION.
(c) Permit the temperature of the brake housing bushing to become approximately 250°F. 1) Use the thermometer to measure the temperature of the brake
housing bushing.

Remove the electrical heat blanket from the brake housing bushing.

Immediately install the brake housing bushing before the temperatures of the bushing and the axle go to the ambient temperature.
CAUTION:_______DO NOT HIT THE BUSHING DIRECTLY WITH THE HAMMER. THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BRAKE HOUSING BUSHING.
(a)
If it is necessary, carefully use a hammer with a block of wood to move the sleeve.
(b)
Make sure the flange of the brake housing bushing is fully against the truck beam.
