Tall, taller, tallest
True, Denmark is a flat country. However, within the Realm there are mountains much much taller than the
170 m Himmelbjerget [sky mountain] in Jutland. The highest of them all is Hvitserk [white coat], so
named by the Norseman Gunnbjörn 1100 years ago. Today it carries his name and Gunnbjörns Fjeld lies
veiled in snow and surrounded by glaciers in the range called Watkins Bjerge the Himalaya of East
Greenland c. 350 km north of Ammassalik. This mountain range is probably the least accessible in the
Arctic and it owes its name to the young British explorer and adventurer Henry George Watkins who, in
1932, drowned during an expedition in East Greenland.
The few hardcore mountaineers who every year fight their way to this isolated and snow-covered peak, register
that they are standing 12319 feet above sea level. This translates into exactly 3699,96917 meters
but as the sea surface is rarely level everyone accepts that Gunnbjörns Fjeld is straightforward 3700 meters
tall. The neighbours of Gunnbjörn, i.e. Kershaws Fjeld , Johnsons Fjeld , Snebordet [the snow table]
and Ejnar Mikkelsens Fjeld are all similar types towering well above the 3 km notch. Mount Forel , 200
km further south, just squeezes into Greenland s top-5 tops with its 3360 m.
Petermann Bjerg , 2940 m tall, is the highest mountain in the National Park of North and East Greenland,
but it is not the highest point in the park. If one wants to be at the highest surface point in the National Park,
one must travel onto the Ice Sheet. At 72°34 31 N / 37°38 42 W the snow surface of the Ice Sheet is 3278
m above sea level. This highest locality is where the world famous Danish-led ice coring project GRIP took
place in 1990-92 and it is about 20 meters higher and 30 km away from Summit , the U.S. research station,
which is most often, but incorrectly, labelled as the top of the ice .
The highest mountain in West Greenland is Naparutaq (2190 m) at the north side of Evighedsfjorden
[eternity fjord] in Maniitsoq municipality. Naparutaq was the nickname of Greenland s first native preast
Frederik Berthelsen. However, older or foreign maps often display another name for this mountain: Mount
Atter , named so to honour the British mountaineer Michael Atter who, in 1935, died on the mountain while
trying to conquer it.
Southernmost Greenland hosts an impressive number of peaks and summits that attract adventurous
climbers from around the world. Most famous and desired are the peaks around Tasermiut , a fjord in Nanortalik
municipality, because they pose dramatic challenges. Uiluit Qaqqaa [oyster mountain] also known
as Ketils Fjeld is by far the most impressive with its 2100 meters of which 1400 meters form the sheer,
almost vertical west face, a match for even the best climbers.
However, the highest of all mountains in the polar regions is Vinson Massif in the Antarctic range Ellsworth
Mountains . Vinson named to honour the U.S. politician Carl G. Vinson who, in the early part of the
1900s, promoted U.S. engagement in Antarctic research reaches 4897 meters above the icy and icecovered
Antarctic waters.

The North Poles
Well, isn t there just one North Pole? No, it is not that simple. As the matter of fact, we have four North
Poles: Two geographic, one magnetic and one geomagnetic.
The intersection point between Earth s rotational axis and the sea surface in the Arctic Ocean is called the
geographic North Pole, even though this point can be as much as 15 meters off the 90.00°N. When one
stands at the top of the World there is only one direction: South. All 360 meridians (longitudinal lines) meet
in the geographic North Pole and all time zones are literally just around your feet. If you like Canada Post
believe that Santa Claus lives at 90°N please remember that the postal zip code for this place is Canadian
and is spelled H0H 0H0 !!
But this North Pole is just water and ice. If you want terra firma under your feet at 90°N you ll need to descent
4302 meters into the abyss. Down there, the underwater version of the geographic North Pole sits at
the bottom of the Arctic Ocean in eternal darkness. This North Pole was first visited by Man 2 August 2007.
Four Russians, one Australian and one Swede onboard the two small Russian submarines Mir-1 and Mir-
2 completed a nine hours long dive, whose climax undoubtedly was the planting of the Russian tricolor in
the muddy sea bed at 90ºN.
