Prime Minister Harper to
deliver real improvement to
our northern communities
by overhauling the Northern
Residents Allowance. This
tax deduction was introduced
in the 1980s to provide
remote communities across
Canada with benefits to
offset high living costs and
applies to every northern
resident. It equates to $5,400
per year for every household
of northern communities
across Canada, except
northern NB, NS and PEI.
In my view this exclusion
is an unjust legacy of the
Conservative Government
which excluded our region
when introducing this fiscal
development for Canada’s
remote communities.
With the support of the
Public Service Alliance
of Canada, a petition to
Parliament was presented
on December 21st, 2007,
and it’s imperative for the
sustainability of our island
that this national fiscal
measure be broadened
to include our island and
region.
Jack Layton’s NDP have
also launched a campaign
against ATM fees and
Canada’s cryptic banking
regime that provides banks
with service premiums of
loan-shark-like caliber that
reaches deeply into the
pockets of all Canadians.

I am resigning as chair
of the CBI Provincehood
Campaign to pursue the
fray of federal politics. I
have been approached by
multiple political interests
to take the fight for social
and economic justice for
our island into the arena of
mainstream politics for the
purpose of asserting a vision
that will get CBI back on
a healthy and sustainable
track. The exodus of our
workforce from this once
vibrant economic anchor
of Canada’s industrial birth
is threatening the existence
and continuity of our
communities and culture.
To move forward change
is required: to return hope,
dignity and prosperity to our
people.
A name change is
advocated as we have
been sensationalized as
“separatists” by the media.
Whereas better governance
for CBI is the goal, whether
as a decentralized form of
government within Nova
Scotia, as an autonomous
region within NS, or as
Canada’s 11th province.
A bank account has
been established with the
East Coast Credit Union
and officers appointed. All
donations may be forwarded
directly to the Credit Union.
A fund-raising campaign,
led by Brian Joseph, PhD
(Harvard) with the CBI
business community has
commenced.

Dear editor,
I would like to respond
to a letter written by Gelas
Poirier of Cheticamp
regarding my defence of
Peter MacKay, minister for
ACOA (Cuzner’s attack
on MacKay regrettable
– Murphy).
In his letter, Mr. Poirier
wrongly suggests that
my research is somehow
incomplete. He notes that
the some of the projects
I mentioned which have
been supported by Minister
MacKay were originally
signed off by former ACOA
Minister Joe McGuire. This
is true, and I never suggested
otherwise. What is also true
however is the fact that the
projects mentioned by Mr.
Poirier, among many others,
have enjoyed the active
support of Mr. MacKay,
which is very important.
A case in point is the
Mulgrave Heritage Centre.
About $300,000 in new
funding, beyond what
Minister McGuire originally
approved, had to be found
to ensure that the centre was
ready in time for the grand
opening this past October.
Minister MacKay’s support
helped make that happen.
In fact, Minister MacKay,
I in my time as the minister’s
director of regional affairs,
MLA Ron Chisholm and
Mr. Cuzner were publicly
thanked by local committee
chair George Freer for our
support of the project at that
opening.
Mr. Poirier also neglected
to mention, for example, the
$500,000 in new funding
for trail development in
Inverness County approved
by Minister MacKay. The
bottom line is that Peter
MacKay has been a great
friend to Cape Breton-
Canso in his time as ACOA
minister.
Perhaps Mr. Poirier may
want to do some of his own
homework and check to
see how much funding Mr.
