objectives were to preserve
our Acadian heritage and
to promote the intellectual,
cultural, social and economic
aspects of the Acadians of
Cape Breton.
For the first twenty
years, the society focused
mainly on post-secondary
education by giving loans
and bursaries to students
from money acquired
through door-to-door
collections and in churches.
After the government took
over the charge of student
loans, La Société Saint-
Pierre laid emphasis on its
former objectives. In 1971,
La Société Saint-Pierre
was placed in abeyance
following the founding of
the Fédération acadienne
de la Nouvelle-Écosse (The
Acadian Federation of
Nova Scotia). In 1975, the
disappearance of La Société
Saint-Pierre was opposed
and new directors were
elected. In 1976, DEVCO
(Cape Breton Development
Corporation) met with the
directors of the society. Tom
Kent, president of DEVCO
at the time, stated that our
French community was
undoubtedly an economic
asset for our tourism due to
our unique culture. He said,
“It is not only our duty to
preserve our heritage but
also to develop it and make
it known.” He had a vision of
using our fine craftsmanship,
our heritage and showcasing
this all over the world. He
spoke of tourists not being
satisfied with just admiring
our scenery, but instead, the
visitors would stay in the area
for a longer period of time if
they could experience our
culture. DEVCO provided
La Société Saint-Pierre with
a grant, and as a result Les
Trois Pignons was built, 18thcentury
French architectural
style, and opened its doors
in 1978.
Today, Les Trois
Pignons is primarily a
cultural and information
centre. It is situated at the
entrance of Chéticamp
harbour and plays a vital
role in the economic, social,
cultural and intellectual
development of this, our
Acadian community. Various
services are provided by inhouse
staff and volunteers,
blended together,
successfully attaining the
objectives of the society.
During the spring/summer/
fall seasons visitors can
seek and obtain information
concerning the activities,
the services and attractions
of the area. The guides
receive extensive training
and are quite knowledgeable
about our community and
know firsthand the Acadian
way of life. This is quite
apparent as these guides
walk the visitors through the
Elizabeth LeFort Gallery
and the Marguerite Gallant
Collection. The museum
showcases hundreds of
antiquities reflecting daily
life during the settlement
of Chéticamp. Prominent
in the exhibits of tools
are demonstrations of
techniques used by the
world-renowned Chéticamp
rug hookers. The gallery
showcases some of the finest
work by local craftspeople,
from traditional antiques
to contemporary hooked
rugs. One might ask, what
was so special about these
Acadians that they’re the
main features of Les Trois
Pignons? The following
information surely answers
the question.
Born in 1914, Elizabeth
LeFort learned to hook
rugs at a very young age.
In the early twenties,
she was already hooking
landscapes based on photos
or illustrations that appealed
to her. One of her pieces,
made as a gift to her sister,
featured a barnyard scene
in 28 shades of brown.
This tapestry was so fine
that it caught the attention
of gift shop owner Mr.
Kenneth Hansford, who
promptly offered to buy all
of Elizabeth’s future work.
Each summer, Elizabeth
LeFort worked for Mr.
Hansford, demonstrating
rug making in his craft store
in Margaree Harbour. She
made hundreds of tapestries
in a large variety of subjects
including pastoral scenes,
birds, animals and floral
motifs. Elizabeth was so
skillful at reproducing
photographs that she
began to create portraits
on wool. Her portrait of
American president Dwight
Eisenhower was presented
to him at the White House
in 1957. She followed
with a series of portraits
including Queen Elizabeth
II, Pope Paul XII, Pope
John XXIII, Jacqueline
Kennedy, President
Lyndon Johnson, Prime
Ministers Lester Pearson,
