We can only try to read between the lines
of the details of their lives. Onward and
outward!
But the beauty of the headland of Cape
George remains. Sometimes it catches the
rays of the rising sun; at other times it is
shrouded by fog or mist or sheets of sleet.
As well, we can marvel at its shape and
colour as the sun leaves the sky behind
on a January evening and a half-full moon
shines down on the shore. So many stories
to be told – so much to see there and
beyond, and also nearby!
As the poet Keats wrote, “a thing of
beauty is a joy forever,” and the words
of the contemporary writer Kavitha
Krishnamurthy seem true as we read her
lines, “so many beauties in this spectacular
world and its dazzling life.” Hurrah for the
eyes that see and the imaginations that
carry us to unexpected places!

50 years on insulin:
Charles Neil enjoys a full life
despite his fight against diabetes

Last week, Charles Neil
MacDonald of East Lake
Ainslie was presented with a
framed print of The Banting
Museum in tribute to his
50 years of using insulin to
combat his diabetes. The
86-year-old retired teacher
and farmer is one of just 300
people who have benefi ted
from insulin use for that
long a period, and for that
achievement Charles Neil
was presented with the
Novo Nordisk Half Century
Award at the Inverness
Consolidated Memorial
Hospital last Friday.
Charles Neil was fi rst
diagnosed with diabetes in
1952, and since 1955 he has
been a daily user of insulin.
“I’ve had no ill effects
from daily injections,”
says MacDonald, looking
vigorous and healthy.
The longevity of his
use of insulin is in itself a
history of insulin use.
Diagnosed fi rst in
Inverness by Dr. Frank
MacLeod, the support
system for diabetes sufferers
wasn’t as organized and
effective as it is today. Dr.
MacLeod provided Charles
with a vial of Protamine
Zinc Insulin, a glass syringe,
and a needle that was closer
to a spike than today’s fi ner
disposable models. Charles
needed to sterilize the needle
after each use, but fi rst he
needed to learn how to use
it.
His neighbour, Myrtle
MacDonald, was a nurse
who was living at home
at the time looking after
her parents, both of whom
suffered from diabetes.
With the needle supplied
by Dr. MacLeod and an
orange, Myrtle had Charles
Neil practice injections
in the citrus until he felt
comfortable enough to inject
himself.
“I began injecting myself,
and when the needle got
dull I sharpened it myself,”
Charles Neil MacDonald
explains, because there was
no pharmacy where he could
get another, “and I boiled
it.”
Despite suffering from
diabetes for half a century,
Charles has managed to
lead a full and active life,
teaching and farming and
enjoying everything he
indulged in. He is quick,
