“She was always there
for you, a true friend,” he
added.
He said it was as if he
had always known her.
“We’ll all miss her,” he
said.

team you were never short
of copy.
Allena had a nose for
news and couldn’t let a story
pass for a week.
At deadline time her
stories would fl ow in but
she would always say: “I’ll
have the last one for you in
an hour. Give me an hour.”
Jake Boudrot, editor
of The Reporter where
Allena worked for a number
of years, said she was a
mainstay of the journalism
community in the quad
counties of Inverness,
Richmond, Guysborough
and Antigonish.
“If there was council,
school board or a community
event she was there,” he
said.
He said she had no
problem pressing the
members of council or
school board but had a
good relationship with all of
them.
“She could be critical
doing her job, but she had
their respect at the same
time,” he added.
“It was a huge punch
in the gut when we heard
the news of her death on
Monday,” Boudrot said.
He pointed out how well
she knew the area and how
many connections she had.
“She provided a lot of
knowledge,” he said. “She
was a tremendous resource,
a great reporter.”
He said that she was
strident when she believed
in something, and she could
be tenacious when pursuing
a story.
“Even if you disagreed
with her, you had to respect
her stance,” he said.
Boudrot said it was a sad
newsroom at The Reporter
on Monday.
Allena loved the place
she lived and its people. She
could have left and made
a great living elsewhere,
but she chose to stay here,
working several jobs to
make ends meet.
“It’s heartbreaking. She
was always around, always
there,” Bob MacEachern,
owner of The Hawk said.
He said they always
looked to her for guidance
because she knew the local
news scene so well, the
people and the issues. If she
didn’t remember something
she had the fi les to bring it
back.
MacEachern said they
used her to help the young
reporters to get a grip on
what was going on in the
community.
“I used to tell them to
stick with Allena at a news
conference, and she enjoyed
taking them under her
wing,” he said.
He added that she had a
great nose for news, but she
had a wonderful humourous
side.
“She could be doing a
really diffi cult story, but she
was always able to fi nd the
humour in it,” MacEachern
said.
He said she enjoyed
people, and one of her
strengths was that she
understood there were
people in the story and it
would impact them.
“We need that,” he
concluded.
Besides her parents, she
leaves to mourn two sisters,
Chrissi and Murlana, and a
brother, Dwayne.
Visitation will be at
Dennis Haverstock Funeral
Home in Port Hawkesbury
on Thursday from 7:00pm
to 9:00pm and Friday
from 2;00-9:00pm with
funeral on Sat. at 11:00am
at St. Joseph’s in Port
Hawkesbury.
