In memory of this special
historian, the new auditorium
at L’École NDA, under the
direction of Le Conseil des
Arts de Chéticamp, will be
named “Place des arts Père
Anselme Chiasson.”
When Father Charles
Aucoin (1911-1999) retired
from his priestly duties
in 1973, the beneficiary
of that retirement was
the village of Chéticamp.
For the next quarter of a
century, the Chéticamp
native threw himself into
a labour of love. His name
has become synonymous
with the resurrection of La
Société Saint-Pierre and the
founding of the voluntary
department of history and
genealogy at Les Trois
Pignons. Father Aucoin
undertook the laborious
task of transcribing by hand
all the old church records
from 200 years of Acadian
settlement in northern
Inverness County. He
prepared more than 100,000
personal file cards and
wrote a number of articles
on Acadian life and history.
As well, Father Aucoin
delighted in entertaining
visitors to the cultural
centre. He was of particular
help to former Chéticamp
people or their descendants
who returned to the village
in search of information
about their ancestors and
their family history.
Today, this very
important department of
history and genealogy of
the Chéticantins is under
the direction of a team
of dedicated volunteers:
Jean-Doris (à Joe à Joe)
LeBlanc, Edmond (à
Patrick à Michael) Burns
and Charles D. (Freddie 
Damien) Roach. They house
an accumulation of archival
material such as books,
copies of parish registers,
census lists, listing of names
from all the headstones in the
cemetery, old photographs
and more.
Today, Les Trois
Pignons is a busy hive of
various services including
the offices of La Société
Saint-Pierre, Service Canada
Community Office, the Cap
Site and rents out space to
The Career Development
Association of Inverness
Richmond and Le Conseil de
développement économique
de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Les
Trois Pignons is also home
to Radio CKJM and Studio
Marcel Doucet.
La Société Saint-Pierre
plays a vital role as a key
player in the community.
Looking back, the following
are but a few examples of
their contribution to the
economic and cultural sector
of our region:
– The society dates back to
1947, and the first annual
meeting of the society was
held in the sacristy of the
Saint-Joseph-du-Moine
Church.
– In 1951, the society had
received 14 requests for
student loans. Three years
later, the society had 26
students; the total amount of
these loans was $8,629.69.
– In the early 1980s, the
society rescued Cheticamp
Printing, which became
L’Imprimerie Nordet, to
ensure that this business
continued to thrive in
our community. Today, it
is known as Richardson
Printing.
– In 1981, the society
participated in discussions
and plans to establish our
own radio station; 15 years
later, Radio CKJM became
a reality.
– In 1985, the society hosted
the bicentennial celebrations
of Chéticamp.
– For over 20 years, the
society owned and managed
La Plage Saint-Pierre.
– In 1998, six local women
were involved in a project
spearheaded by the society
and the result was the creation
of a hooked rug measuring
15 feet by 10.5 feet which
was commissioned for the
residence of the Governor
General of Canada.
– The society assisted in the
primary stages in planning
the Congrès mondial
acadien 2004 in Nova
Scotia. They played a major
role in the organization
of activities during this
gathering and served as the
home base throughout this
special event. This same
year, they undertook the
task of embellishing main
street, Chéticamp with a
new sidewalk, rest areas
and lampposts, which is
maintained throughout the
year.
– In 2001, the society
announced that they
would be receiving funds
from various government
agencies to renovate Les
Trois Pignons costing
$750,000. In 2002, marked
the official opening of the
