Discover Canada without even leaving
your living room!
That’s what Katimavik, Canada’s
leading national youth service program,
has to offer if you become a billet for a
period of two weeks from June 15th to
June 29th. Our organization is presently
looking for local residents who are keen
to host Katimavik participants aged 17
to 21 from across Canada. Here is your
chance to get to know a young person
who is presently volunteering in your
community while introducing them to our
Cape Breton culture!
As part of Katimavik’s learning
program, participants must spend 14
days in a host family of the region they
are volunteering in, so as to get a better
grasp of the culture and local life.
For some participants, this is also an
excellent opportunity to benefi t from a
full-fl edged linguistic immersion. This
precious experience will be fi lled with
discoveries for both your family and the
participant(s). Each billet residence will
receive a subsistence allowance for the
host period.
Katimavik is in Inverness
The Katimavik group arrived in
Inverness on December 6th and will live
in the community for the next three
months before heading to Legal, Alberta
to continue their nine-month program.
The group is compromised of three
women and two men who are living in
a house rented by Katimavik and are
supervised by a project leader who lives
with them. These young participants are
volunteering fi ve days a week at local
non-profi t organizations including the
Cottage Workshop and Bakery, Inverness
Education Academy, Inverary Manor,
Inverness Memorial Hospital, and
the Dr. Bernie MacLean Cultural and
Recreational Centre.

with you! Each residence that hosts a
Katimavik participant receives a stipend
to offset costs.
The Katimavik program
Katimavik offers youth between
the ages of 17 and 21 an exciting ninemonth
journey of self-discovery in three
different regions of Canada. The program
is based on the concept of service
learning, which integrates both personal
and professional development through
volunteer work on community projects.
In addition to working 35 hours a week
on community projects, participants
benefi t from a learning program that
focuses on developing leadership skills,
offi cial languages profi ciency, protecting
the environment, cultural discovery
and a healthy lifestyle. Each Katimavik
participant contributes an average of 900
hours of volunteer work to community
partner organizations.
Since 1977, more than 25,000
young Canadians have participated in
the Katimavik program, developing
their sense of civic responsibility and
gaining self-confi dence. Katimavik’s
goal is to form responsible citizens who
will contribute signifi cantly to Canadian
society.

With the exception of
West Mabou, the dance
halls and most venues for
Cape Breton fi ddling are
suspended as snow piles up
on concert fi elds and travel
safety is less assured. But
every Sunday afternoon in
Judique that general silence
is broken by the familiar
sound of a fi ddle tuning up,
a piano following along, and
perhaps a guitar chording
its way through a set of
strathspeys and reels.
This is the weekly Sunday
afternoon ceilidh at the
Music Interpretive Centre
