The person who is most relieved about the Strait board’s decision to
circumvent its own desire for a legal opinion (which may itself have been
unethical) must be Education Minister Karen Casey.
If Brenda Gillis had succeeded in her effort to have the board abandon
its code of ethics, the education minister would have found herself in the
unenviable position of deciding whether or not to follow through on her
threat to close down a democratically elected school board which operates
in the constituency that also elected this province’s own premier.
There is political power, but then again there is always a higher political
power.

With names like Margaree Mist, Skipper’s Pride, Weather or Knot, Millennium Connection, Loretta
C. Ann, Brittany Rose, and Island Venture II, these colourful fishing boats sat aligned and facing the
sea at Margaree Harbour last week.
Dear editor,
To continue to ignore
the plight of the veterans’
widows previous to
1981 by withholding
the VIP from them any
longer is inexcusable
and unacceptable of the
government who one year
and eleven months ago
promised to grant the VIP
immediately when they
were elected. All words and
no action since.
The promise was made by
the leader of the Opposition
Party seven months before
he became Prime Minister.
Thinking Stephen Harper’s
promise was sincere and
genuine and that his promise
would be kept, far too many
veterans’ widows voted for
him.
They were feeling certain
they were finally going to
receive some financial help
they had been in dire need of
since their husbands died at
a young age. Many were left
with six or seven children or
more to bring up alone and
no financial help from the
government.
For many long years these
veterans’ widows and their
children suffered unknown
hardships trying to survive
in poverty. Now the children
have their own homes and
the veterans’ widows are
struggling to survive and
stay in their own home on a
poverty income. Many had
to leave their homes because
they were unable to maintain
them. This could be avoided
if they were getting the help
they are entitled to from the
government.
Unless we walk in their
shoes we know not what
they are suffering. One
thing is certain, no amount
of money could ever repay
these veterans widows and
their families for all the long
years of hardships they went
through since their husbands
died, whom lest we forget
we owe our freedom, peace
and very existence too.
Where is the compassion
of the government to do the
right thing for the veterans’
widows and also the many
World War 11 veterans who
it is heart-breaking to think
are still not receiving the
VIP.
To give the VIP benefit
to the veterans’ widows
and veterans is the least
the government can do. It
is the government’s moral
obligation to keep the
promise they made and
grant the VIP Immediately.

New Year’s resolutions
Nova Scotians make each
year. Many individuals
know they need to change,
but it can be very difficult to
make resolutions stick.
New Year’s is a great
time to take on new personal
challenges and improve
health and well-being.
Those who make healthy
lifestyle choices now will
see improved health in the
years to come.
When setting New
Year’s resolutions make
sure they are realistic.
To increase the chances
of success, map out a plan
to help achieve goals. Work
with a friend or spouse with
similar plans. It is vital for
individuals to stay positive
throughout the process and
understand that long-term
goals are more important
than short-term.
If an individual
has trouble sticking to
resolutions, it is important
that they keep trying
throughout the year.

ways to improve their health
and to make healthy lifestyle
changes for 2008.
