(g) Use a block, STD-1278 and push/pull scale 0-25 pound (0-11 kilogram), STD-753 to move the
rudder to the left side with a force of 12.0 +/- 4.0 pounds (53 +/- 17 newtons) and release
slowly.
NOTE: Apply the force approximately 6-8 inches (150-200 millimeters) from the bottom of
the trailing edge and 3 inches (80 millimeters) forward of the trailing edge.
1) Make a record of the rudder position on the dial indicator, STD-1238.
(h) Make sure the difference between the two left positions is not more than 0.03 inch (0.7
millimeter).
(i) Remove the dial indicator, STD-1238 from the rudder.

5. Horizontal Stabilizer - Inspection

A. General
(1) This task is to calculate the freeplay of the horizontal stabilizer. The freeplay of the horizontal
stabilizer is the total of the freeplay of the stabilizer jackscrew and the hinge mechanism.
(2) In this task, you can use two persons at 220 +/- 25 pounds (100 +/- 11 kilograms) each for
applying the force, W, on the stabilizer. Measure and record the weight of each person and the
total weight of the two persons. The difference between the two persons should be not more than
10 pounds (5 kilograms). Alternatively, you can use two weights, such as bars or shot.
NOTE: When recording the weights during this freeplay measurement task, the weights should
be recorded in pounds and not in kilograms. When recording dial indicator
measurements, inches should be recorded and not millimeters. The calculations for
freeplay, X, Y, and Z use multipliers that are calculated using pounds and inches, not
kilograms and millimeters. Using metric equivalents in the equations that determine
freeplay values X, Y, and Z will cause the calculated freeplay values to be in error.

G. Horizontal Stabilizer Inspection
SUBTASK 27-09-91-220-008
(1) Do a check of the freeplay for the hinge bearing of the stabilizer center section (Figure 604):
(a) Measure the freeplay of the left hinge bearing (X):
1) Attach an dial indicator, STD-1238 with a mount, STD-1279 to the left side of the fuselage
at the rear spar connector of the stabilizer.
a) Make sure that the plunger of the dial indicator, STD-1238 pushes against the
stabilizer lower surface at a minimum dial travel of 0.13 inch (3.2 millimeters).
2) Use the weight to slowly apply a force, ‘‘W’’, of 440 +/- 50 pounds (200 +/- 23
kilograms) to the outboard end of the left stabilizer above the front spar.
NOTE: When recording the weights during this freeplay measurement task, the
weights should be recorded in pounds and not in kilograms. The calculation
for freeplay, X, uses a multiplier that is calculated using pounds for a weight
measurement, not kilograms. Using metric equivalents in the equation that
determines the freeplay value X, will cause the calculated freeplay value to be
