TRIMMABLE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER ATTACH FITTINGS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General.________
A. Different attach fittings are installed on the spar boxes and the center joint of the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS). These are:
-
the fittings for the attachment of the horizontal stabilizer to the cone rear fuselage structure,
-
the Y-load fittings,
-
the fittings for the attachment of the horizontal stabilizer to the THS hydromechanical actuator,
-
the hinge arms for the attachment of the left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) elevators,
-
the fittings for the attachment of the elevator support struts,
-
the fittings for the attachment of the elevator to the elevator servo control-units,
-
the fittings for the attachment of ground support equipment,
-
the fittings to hoist and to support the THS.
2. Description.____________ (Ref. Fig. 001)
A. THS Attachment Fittings.
-The THS is attached to the cone rear fuselage structure at two pivot points. The pivot points have attach fittings and support fittings. They are installed on each side of the THS centerline at RIB 3. The upper and lower attach fittings are made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). Rivets attach them to RIB 3 and to the skin of the sparboxes. They have eye-ends for the attachment of the support fittings. The support fittings are made of CFRP and bolts attach them to the eye-ends of the attach fittings. Rivets attach the flanges of the support fittings to the rear spar of the THS. Bearings are fitted in the pivot points of the support fittings. Y-load fittings, made from milled light alloy are installed on RIB 4 of the THS. These keep the primary attach bolts in the correct alignment axis.
B. THS Adjustment.
-You can adjust the angle of incidence of the THS with an hydromechanical actuator. The actuator is connected to a dual fitting at the forward end of the center joint. The fittings are made of stainless steel.

C. THS Hinge Arms.
-The LH and RH spar boxes have six hinge arms to hold the elevators. The hinge arms are installed to the rear spars and the upper and lower skin shells. Each hinge arm has a fitting with a bearing at its outer end to attach the elevators. The elevator hinge arms are made of CFRP.
D. Elevator Support Strut.
-A fitting for the installation of the elevator support strut is installed on the LH and RH of the rear spar. They are installed at the rib No. 9. The attach fittings are milled components made of light alloy.
E. Elevator Servo-control Attachment Fittings.
-Fittings for the attachment of the elevator servo controls are installed on the rear spar. They are installed at the ribs No. 7 and No. 8. The attach fittings are made of layers of CFRP.
F. Ground Support Equipment Fittings.
-Two different types of attach fittings for ground support equipment are installed on the THS . To the fitting at the lower side of the center joint a support strut is installed when you remove/install the THS actuator. To the fittings at the rear spars distance struts are installed when you remove/install the THS bearings.
G. Hoisting and Resting Points.
-Two hoisting points and two resting points are installed on each side of the THS. The fittings of the hoisting points are installed in the upper surface. The fittings of the resting points are installed in the lower surface. All fittings are milled components made of light alloy.
