(c) Clean the mating surfaces with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-004).
(2) Check the steel cover (13) for good conditinon and replace if necessary. If you must replace the steel cover, continue as follows:
(a)
Remove the sealant from around the steel cover (13) with a nonmetallic scraper.
(b)
Make the steel cover (13) hot with a hot air blower. NOTE : Do not increase the temperature at the steel cover (13) to
____
more then 60 deg.C (140.00 deg.F)
(c)
Carefully release the steel cover (13) with a non metallic scraper.
(d)
Remove the old sealant from the leading edge-section (10) with a non metallic scraper.
(e)
Clean the leading-edge section (10) with CLEANING AGENTS
(Material No. 11-004).
(f)
Make sure that the paint coating is in the correct condition and repair if necessary (Ref. ASRM 512300).
(g)
Make the inner surface of the steel cover (13) rough. NOTE : Do not drill the holes in the steel cover at this time. If
____
you do, the steel cover get damage.
(h)
If removed, apply SEALANTS (Material No. 09-013) to the washers
(6) and install them.

(i)
Apply adhesive tape to the contour of the steel cover on the leading-edge.
(j)
Apply SEALANTS (Material No. 09-005) to the mating surfaces of the leading-edge skin and the steel cover. Use a roller.
(k)
Put the steel cover in position and press the steel cover with a roller on the leading-edge.
NOTE : Make sure that no air bubbles are under the steel cover.

(l) Remove the adhesive tape and the unwanted sealant from around the steel cover.
(3) Install the vacuum equipment.
(a)
Attach the SEALANTS (Material No. 09-030) (11) around and approximately 30 mm (1.1811 in.) from the edge of the steel cover.
(b)
Install a sheet of porous felt (15) with BONDING AND ADHESIVE COMPOUNDS (Material No. 08-065) to the steel cover.
(c)
Attach the vacuum valve (17) to the vacuum foil (16).
(d)
Put the vacuum foil (16) in position on the steel cover, make sure it makes an overlap of the seal tape (11) by approximately 30 mm (1.1811 in.).
(e)
Connect the vacuum pump to the vacuum valve (17).
NOTE : Make sure that the vacuum foil makes an overlap of the

seal tape.
(f) Operate the vacuum pump for as long necessary, refer to the environmental temperature shown in the table:

(4)
Remove the vacuum pump.
(a)
Disconnect the vacuum pump from the vacuum valve (17).
(b)
Remove the vacuum foil (16).
(c)
Remove the vacuum valve (17) from the vacuum foil (16).
(d)
Remove the porous felt (15).
(e)
Remove the seal tape (11).
(f)
Clean the steel cover and the adjacent area with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-004).
(5)
Drilling of the steel cover (13).
(a)
Carefully drill with a drill 4.8 mm (0.1889 in.) from the inner side of the leading-edge through the steel cover.
(b)
Make the diameter of the hols around the leading-edge to 9 mm (0.3543 in.). Use a countersink tool.
(c)
Make the diameter of the hols of the hoist fittings to 32 mm (1.2598 in.). Use a abrade tool.
(6)
Apply a bead of SEALANTS (Material No. 09-013) to all but joints and around the holes.

C. Prepare the Vertical Stabilizer Leading-Edge for Installation
(1)
Remove the old sealant from the mating surface of the leading edge sections, the ribs and the spar box with a nonmetallic scraper.
(2)
Make sure that the anchor nuts at the leading edge ribs and along the spar box are in good condition.
