Examine the axle.

If the axle threads have nicks, burrs, or damaged threads, do a check on the axle and axle nut (AMM 32-21-71/601).

 NOTE: Make sure the correct part number wheel bearings are
____ installed or damage to the wheel and axle can occur.

Put the spacer on the axle.

Install the three cotter pins to hold the spacer on the axle.

Install the grease seal, retaining ring, and inner bearing on the inboard side of the wheel.

 CAUTION:_______ DO NOT APPLY GREASE TO THE AREA BETWEEN THE AXLE BEARING.
 HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THIS AREA DURING A LANDING CAN CAUSE
 ALL GREASE IN THIS AREA TO BURN.  THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO
 WHEELS, TIRES, AND BRAKES.
 (6)  Lubricate the bearing seals with Aeroshell 22 grease.

 (7)  Put the wheel and tire assembly on the wheel change dolly.

 (8)  Put the wheel and tire assembly on the axle.

 (9)  Remove the axle thread protection.

 Install the outer bearing, grease seal, and retaining ring on the outboard side of the wheel.

 Align the key of the washer with the keyway of the axle to install the washer.

 Lubricate the threads on the axle nut.

 Do the steps that follow to install the axle nut:

 (a)  
While you turn the wheel, tighten the axle nut to 80-100 pound-feet.

 (b)  
Stop the wheel.

 (c)  
Loosen the nut to zero torque.

 (d)  
While you turn the wheel again, do the steps that follow: 1) Tighten the axle nut to 30 pound-feet 2) Continue tightening axle nut until two lockbolt holes in

 the axle nut align with threaded holes in the washer for the outer bearing.

 Install the two lockbolts for the axle nut.

 Install a lockwire between the two lockbolt heads.

 Fill the tire (AMM 12-15-51/301).
