E. Torque Tube Installation
SUBTASK 27-21-71-420-006-002
(1) Install the torque tube [1]:
(a) Make sure that the plate [40], lower bearing housing [21], retainer [41], and plate [42] in
their positions on the torque tube [1].
(b) Put the torque tube [1] through the structural cutouts, center cranks [29], upper crank [34],
and upper bearing housing [35].
NOTE: Put the center cranks [29] and upper crank [34] in their original position before
you put the torque tube [1] through the structural cutouts.
(c) Install the bolts [37], washers [38], and nuts [39] to attach the lower bearing housing [21] to
the airplane structure.
(d) Install the center cranks [29] on the torque tube [1]:
1) Install the bolts [24], bolts [28], washers [25], washers [26], and nuts [27] to attach the
center cranks [29] to the torque tube [1].
2) Tighten the nuts [27] to 15-25 pound-inches (1.69-2.82 newton-meters) above the run-on
torque.
(e) Install the upper crank [34] to the torque tube [1]:
1) Install the bolt [24], bolt [28], washers [25], washers [26], and nuts [27] to attach the
upper crank [34] to the torque tube [1].

2) Tighten the nuts [27] to 15-25 pound-inches (1.69-2.82 newton-meters) above the run-on
torque.

(2) Make sure the torque tube [1] turns freely and that there is no play in the horizontal and vertical
directions.
(a) If the torque tube [1] does not turn freely, do a check of the lower bearing housing [21] and
upper bearing housing [35] installation.

(3) Install the bolt assembly [30], washer [31] (under the bolt), washer [32] (under the nut), and nut
[33] to connect the control rod [2] to the upper crank [34].

(4) Install the bolt assemblies [30], washers [31] (under the bolt), washers [32] (under the nut), and
nuts [33] to connect the control rods [3] to the center cranks [29].

(5) Install the rudder trim actuator [18], do this task: Rudder Trim Actuator Installation,

(6) Install the bolt [9], washer [10], and nut [11] to connect the aft quadrant rod [12] to the lower crank
[20].

(7) Connect the control rod [8] to the lower crank [20]:
(a) Install the bolt assembly [4], washer [5], and nut [6].
1) Tighten the nut [6] to 45-60 pound-inches (5.1-6.8 newton-meters).
CAUTION: DO NOT TRY TO TIGHTEN THE NUT [6] AGAIN AFTER YOU TIGHTEN THE NUT [7],
YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(b) Install the nut [7].
1) Tighten the nut [7] to 12-15 pound-inches (1.3-1.7 newton-meters).

(8) Apply grease, D00015 to the upper bearing housing [35] and lower bearing housing [21].
(a) Fill the upper bearing housing [35] and lower bearing housing [21] with grease, D00015
until the grease is level with the surrounding structure.

(9) Do this task: Put the Rudder Systems A, B, and Standby Back to the Condition Before the
Pressure Removal, TASK 27-21-00-840-802.
